Hard, yes. Impossible, no. There were five holes were it was impossible to reach the fairway off the tee. Because its the Open, its OK to make it so beginners can't compete without spending money. But all I'm asking for is a warning that says, "not recommended for beginners."

I just wish someone had warned me that a newbie who hasn't spend a wad of cash on new clubs and golf balls should never venture into the virtual open. It was a horrible experience in terms of game play. No enjoyment at all.

you didn't think it was going to be easy did you? I mean it is a Virtual Open tournament qualifier after all.

Look at it this way, Rick. The high school senior that's raking the opposition's pitching, hitting .600 and leading in every category, All-City everything and a sure bet for the pros. Right after graduation he gets on a plane and heads to Yankee Stadium, or any other major league stadium, and gets his first at bat against Nolan Ryan or Randy Johnson. Do you think he stands a chance?   ;-)

Yes, because I've seen it happen. Besides, it has already been pointed out in this thread that WGT isn't real golf. Scores are lower. The thing that gets me is that it isn't a skill issue, it's a money issue. It wasn't that I couldn't reach those fairways because I don't play the game well enough yet. It was because I hadn't spent enough money yet. I'll be John Daly or Tiger Woods could take clubs off the shelf at K-Mart and go to Congressional and reach every fairway off the tee. Do you think they can't?

The point was the skill factor. The HS kid had the same equipment the pro's did and nowhere near the skill to succeed. You know whatever you saw was an anomaly.

The amount of money you would need to spend doesn't equate to more than a round or 2 IRL but still won't get you game off the shelf. Once spent it's free golf from there on unless you choose to spend money on that cheesy Cabo so in relative terms it's cheap fun.

US Open tees? Maybe, maybe not. LOL-they'd probably break the head off the clubs trying much like the HS kid swinging a foreign wooden bat against a 100 mph heater he's never seen.  :-)

IRL beginners play from the beginners tees. Beginners don't attempt to qualify for the US Open.

That's exactly the information I would have wanted before wasting 45 minutes.

Let me clarify again. I'm not against the course being set up so tough that breaking 100 for an unskilled player is unlikely. What I'm against is that, without regard to my skill, because I haven't paid the money to get better clubs and golf balls, I can't even reach the fairways. That's what I want to be warned against. I am an 18 handicap in real life. I played Crooked Stick just a month before John Daly won the PGA there and I hit every tee shot long enough to reach every fairway. It might have been left or right of the fairway, but it was long enough. My clubs are Wilson Staff so no great expense paid there.

Staff's are great clubs! My first "Real" set of irons were Staff FG-17's (Late 70's).

If they could play the course a hundred times before the tournament they probably would shoot 59's.

I'm not positive, but I think the very first day of the Virtual Open a 59 was posted. Maybe someone can confirm or refute that.
