Are Open high winds Fair

  Again i have to ask the question,Is it fair that Player A can be hitting a 3 iron into a certain hole and player B  hits a PW,that's some difference isnt it,Thats what you will get at RSG with high winds,So my question is,,Is that fair? I don't putt well enough on Championship greens to worry about winning Opens ,I just dont think its fair,Is there another way of toughening the course up without high winds?

  It still puzzles me why the wind strength and direction cannot be the same for all players in any one given tournament. I know people will say someone can pass the info on to someone else but you still have to nail the shots and more importantly hole the putts. Why someone would do that anyway is beyond me.

  I'd rather have the same wind strength and direction for everyone, at the risk of that information being passed on. Better that than luck becoming a not insignificant factor in proceedings.

  It would become boaring, and repetative, and scores would become ridicilous because you could then memorise what shot was best for that hole because it will always be the same.  Where's the fun in that.

  Half the challenge of this game is working out the wind on particilar holes each time, (especially when one camera angle shows a sidewind, the other a south westerly).  This is what gives the best challenge for us each hole.  If you prefer the wind the same for each hole, we might as well go back to using driver/wedge each hole aswell, what about moving tees forward while we're at it. LOL

  I think it would be fair and appropriate if our winds flip flopped for the 2 rounds,So if you get a bad wind on a particular hole in round 1 you will get a favorable wind for that hole in round 2,This way you wont know what winds will be out there in advance .and over the 2 rounds  the wind will level itself over the field of players,It would also make you take advantage more of a good wind on a hole because you will know that in the next round that hole will play harder,

  I think you didn't get what Tiffer means. The wind can be completely random from one hole to another but this random sequence would be the same for each player. This is what Tiffer proposed (if I understood well).

  Edit: The idea of Tess is also another good possibility. Because she is right that heavy wind can lead to huge yardage difference on approach shots depending on you have headwind or tailwind.

  I'm with tiffer, SAME random winds for everyone in a single tournament.

  Of course, that doesn't mean the winds will be the same every time you play those holes, it just changed from a tournament to another.

  Remember Chris we arent talking about 18 winds we are talking tornado winds at RSG,I cant wait to here this Open conditions forum thread like Congressional,And i suspect a few players will get a fantastic wind and smash it,while others will struggle to break 70,Imagine a 30 cross wind at 7 o clock LOL,,Who knows where that ball will end up ,, hahaha

  I would hope over two rounds the law of averages would balance this out.  But with that said, I would really like to see the Open Championship rounds be 4 rounds, almost assuring that the winds would average out.

  For me personally 30 - 32 winds are the most enjoyable to play in.. i wish more tournaments had these conditions..more eagles/ bogeys/ double bogeys involved, drivable par 4's ... hitting driver at par 3 all part of lynx golf

  who seriously wants to play in low winds all the time?!?! for me that makes nearly every shot repetitive..hit every fairway , hit every green and give your self on average a 12 - 15 footer for bird, no fun in that..

  strong winds also brings in the factor of testing your short game skills as i say before there's not a chance you will hit every green

  I totally understood what tiffer ment, i think its you who hasn't.  Random winds the same for each person, it wont be random then, it would be set,as each person will get the same wind.  i.e, if i got 10 mph sidewind for hole #1, everyone will get 10 mph for hole #1
