I am new to the game, only been playing a week or so. I am hoping someone can tell me I am doing something wrong or that there is a bug in the game. On multiple occasions on short shots around the green, I have set the power meter for the ball to go between 5 and 12 yards, while in the rough just off the fringe, and the ball goes a few inches. I thought that maybe the game required a pitch or chip in certain scenarios, but I recently tried a pitch and immediately followed up with a chip. They both went a couple of inches. Finally the third shot went a few inches onto the green.

I am currently using rented coin clubs, I wanted to get a little higher level before purchasing clubs. So maybe those clubs are just glitchy?

Sounds like you might not be using enough power. With my equipment, a pitch out of 30-40 rough at 50% power, the ball will fly about 3 yards and roll 1 yard if its level, more if downhill. Go into practice mode and try pitching out of rough with different amounts of power and note how far out it lands and rolls.

How high or thick is the rough?  This is always the first question you answer before trying your shot. I have found that, for me, the chip out of any rough does not work well, so I pitch or flop.

Next thing is that backspin tends to work less well or not at all in any rough higher than 20/25. So a ball pitched onto the green will likely roll further than if hitting from fairway or fringe since you have had to hit a little harder to get out of the rough.

Because a flop is an elevated shot it will normally not roll as far as a pitch. But it is also hit at an angle to your stance so using the first line left of the power aiming line wll generally point the ball toward the hole.

I love 2 inch chips if they are soft in the middle and crispy on outside. Otherwise i wouldn't give them the time of day.

So what is the right shot when you are in 30% rough, and the flag is only 5yards away? Do you just suck it up and pitch it past the pin?

The First Rule of WGT golf is: Don't trust the caddie! Club and shot proposals are "unfortunate" most of the time, you'll have to check and correct them as a principle!

Second to that, you found other core information!

    - chips and pitches have a low trajectory, with plenty of roll.

    - chips have to land on fringe or green to perform correctly,

    - pitches have to land on FW, fringe or green,

    - club performance is quite nonlinear, meaning that you receive inferior results on low meter %%,

    - clubs don't work as advertised on meter %% below 60/70.

    - low level clubs like the Starters (and probably the coin clubs) perform even worse, especially in the two latter regimes.

My two Pfennig: Play full or punch shots in those situations, and live with overshooting.

    Hi Tracer,

Basically practice, practice & more practice.

A lot of good advice given by some very good players & then other advice given by some who don't even play anymore, Take everyone's advice with a pinch of salt, Check up on who's giving It & what are their scrambling percentages. Do they get up n down to save par a lot or not very often!?

Here's a video tutorial which will help

It's not a bug, it's just something you're going to have to figure out how to play with practice. There are indeed some occasions where what looks to be the "proper" power for the shot is not sufficient to get you out of the hazard such as second cut rough or a bunker.

For example, you may be in a bunker at 40-50% lie, yet only 9 yards away from the hole.  These shots may be possible with high end clubs and balls, but I know using the gear you have that it is basically impossible to get that shot onto the green and have it stop within a few yards of the hole.  The same goes for chips/pitches from the 2nd cut rough.  There just isn't enough power in the shot to free the ball from the rough and get enough spin on the ball to get it to stop after 5 or 6 yards.

So for now, you'll have to develop a feel as to how handle those shots best.  Generally concede that you're not going to hole the short chip from the rough, so you want to take the shot that will get the ball up onto the green.  Yes, this usually means ending up with a shot well past the hole, so you want to try and leave it where the putt coming back will be easiest.

It's not just the chips and pitches out of the sand or rough that have issues.  I have seen full shots out of the sand or rough having issues.  There are too many examples to list.

    - several times I have experienced a sand bunker shot 25 yards from the hole and listed at 25% lie.  Using a 70 yard wedge, I used a full stroke at about 80% power expecting to overshoot the pin but have a clean put back.  I got a 1 yard shot.  It didn't make sense, and my shot indicator showed me the same distance (minus 1 yard) and lie, so I did it again.  This time, the same shot went about 60 yards (45 in the air, and 15 roll) before it stopped.  Pretty much the same shot, two different outcomes.

It's these inconsistencies that make it hard to learn the game.  When you have streaks of bad shots and can't correct them because there is no rhyme or reason, it makes you want to put the game down and walk away.

The sand and rough shots are the worst, but putting can have these issues too, just not as often.  I recently had a bad put where I was 2 ft from the hole with a slope from left to right.  I placed the shot indicator on the hole at the left edge and had a 10% shot power on a 30ft put power.  I dinged the shot but missed by about 5 inches to the left and the put went about 8 feet.  It doesn't make sense sometimes.  I have also missed 1 ft puts, where I got the "excellent stroke" message, but the put missed so badly it was comical.  You would have a hard time aiming that badly to miss the put, but it did.  Sometimes the code in the game just messes up.  I wish it would get fixed.

A person should probably go to the practice green and do the same shot over and over and record the results.  Then you could do some math to determine shot power requirements for certain conditions.
