Has anyone stated the fact that every " chip and pitch shot "varies depending what ball and wedges you are using?

    Athomasan:

It's these inconsistencies that make it hard to learn the game.  When you have streaks of bad shots and can't correct them because there is no rhyme or reason, it makes you want to put the game down and walk away.

The game is extremely consistent. That is why there are so many people shooting such ridiculously low scores. There IS rhyme and reason, so to speak.

I personally think the number one key to improving your game, is to ask yourself after every shot what YOU did. The players I know that never seem to improve seem to think that WGT screws them on every shot. There may be occasional WTH moments in this game, but 95-99% of all your bad shots will simply be you playing it wrong.

I have been fortunate enough to play with some really great players, and they all have one thing in common. They don't have these wild unexplained shots, and they don't blame the game.

I have played almost 3,000 rounds now, and I still feel like I learn new ways to play shots almost every single round. Every shot is different, and there is no magic math formula that tells you exactly what to do. You have to be able to read the situation, and know the course you are playing.

Have fun with it, enjoy the process, and you will figure it out.

    Cheers   Brett

I normally would agree.  I play a few different games and learn the intricacies to become better.  I have been learning this one as well.  Overall, I understand the game and how it plays.  I am striving to be better.  The problem is when you have identical shots with completely different outcomes.  That makes it hard to progress and learn and get to some consistency.   I noticed that I was consistent when I was below level 20 or so.  Once I got above that value, my consistency went out the window.  That's not saying I was great when I was first playing, just that the game seemed to treat my shots consistently.  A 20 foot chip with a 25% lie responded the same if the shot was performed equally, in all instances.  My inconsistencies, were just that, mine.  Once I got above 20 to 24, the consistency of certain shots went out the window.  Shots I was making, might or might not  have the same distance even if all parameters of the shot itself was identical in all instances.  I have been using basic clubs. Maybe a better club gets better consistency.   Perhaps, this is just a way WGT entices players to upgrade sooner than later.

Asking myself what I did is what I was doing.  Identical shots with different outcomes.  How can you determine what you did wrong in that situation?  If it was once in a while, it wouldn't be a big issue.  But I am a player that is progressing and learning.  I happen to be in the bunkers more than a veteran player.  I am probably experiencing these issues more than more experienced players, just because of my location on the field.

I'm not sure anyone has been able to quantify it, but the general consensus is the game does get more difficult as you progress.  So the inconsistencies you are seeing now are intentional and part of the game.

Don't you think there should be a penalty for hitting it into the rough or sand?  The game would be way too easy if it was just a matter of adding a little power compared to a fairway shot and having the ball go to the exact same place.  The rough and sand are unpredictable in real life and that is reflected in the game.  I understand it's frustrating to think you've made the correct calculations and hit the marks on the meter only to have something bizarre happen.  But, that's the penalty of missing fairways and greens in regulation.  I do know what it's like to have mishit on a Par 3 and end up with a 6 because of whacking shots back and forth from the rough across the green.

Also, when you say you are hitting the *exact* same shot, is it a ding in those situations?  Because missing the ding, even by a little bit, can be disastrous on some shots so in those cases, you definitely shouldn't be expecting the same result.

After asking this question, continuing to progress in the game, and seeing responses, I have this to say:

    1. I think for the most part, the game is consistent. The chipping and pitching seem to be totally ineffective if your power level needs to be below 50%. So I either find a different shot or suck it up and at least ensure the ball is in a playable position after the shot, even if that means the ball goes 15 feet past the hole.

    2. With that said, I do think certain inconsistencies are built into the game. As in, if you miss the ding then you have a greater chance of the shot being unpredictable. Thou this seems to be less of an issue with the longer clubs. And you can actually play left or right to your advantage in some situations.

    3. As I have gotten better, I find myself in these weird situations less. And my strategy has changed to avoid these situations. Very similar to real golf.

    4. But the courses have also gotten harder as my tier has changed. The winds are higher, the greens faster, the pins are tighter, and the fairways are narrower. These changes in tiers mean that certain shots are required to further reduce your score and those shots require better clubs. For instance, at level 47 with Ping I25 irons, I can't get the ball to stop on fast greens with the long irons. If the pin is tight, I have to play for a 2-putt. And even though I just upgraded my driver, now that I am Tour Pro there are a few situations where I can't reach a long par 4 in regulation.

    5. On occasion the game does seem semi-rigged or flawed. Not to the point of making me a conspiracy theorist. I think WGT kinda shoots itself in the foot when it comes to managing the relationships with some of its players and that is where those conspiracy theories gain steam. (Relatively little transpararent communication about the game but a ton of promotion to spend money. Which I am ok with paying, it is just a balance issue.)

    6. Overall, I enjoy the game and appreciate what WGT has put together.
