I was hoping I could get some players to share tips on hitting out of dirt. I found myself in 10%-15% dirt this evening at Wolf Creek, and had no idea how to hit the shot. A quick search in the forum didn't produce any assistance. I was hitting uphill onto the green, and had a good backstop if needed. I hit 60% of my Cleveland 64 degree (50 yard) with full backspin. The ball traveled 14 yards, took  one bounce, and stopped dead. Does anyone know if this is typical? I basically made a lucky guess that still came up a couple yards short.

If anyone has good notes on hitting out of dirt that they are willing to share, it would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you in advance

    Brett

    Hi,

From the handful of rare occasions I've been In the dirt I've just added 15% to my adjusted distance & It's gotten me close but my sample size Is very small but I think that's likely to grow as I find more & more dirt over time at Wolf Creek

Replay the same shot on a practice, till you hit the right distance.

    Solid advice.

Yes, Gr8 advice. I had thought of that, but here's the rub. There was no camera angle showing where the ball actually was. (the only view was from the pin or above the green) Additionally, it was precariously close to being in a hazard. I wouldn't want to try and put any ball in that same position. One of the reasons I was hoping someone had some good experience is due to the lack of visual where the ball was. I don't trust that the way that particular shot played would be normal in other "dirt" situations. I guess it at least gives me a starting point.

Perhaps I'll look for dirt elsewhere when I get the chance.

    Thanks

    Yup, that's what I did.

I don't carry the clevelands, but as long as you didn't massively miss hit and would get a general idea... you can get a good "approx. number" from even the 1 hit you had versus going out and mapping 10-20 shots... it won't be perfect but this one hit will get you in the ball park...

So, by simply taking what you know your Cleveland punch for 60% is... say it is 28y  if your ball went 24 before essentially stopping dead then the particular lie you played was basically 86% of the Normal punch mode.

in the future you identify the yardage you are looking to hit-- you take 24/.86 = 27.9

the other option is as Kenher suggest and that is multiply...  24 * 1.15 = 27.6...

they are both going to put you in the ball park to save par depending on green speed, slope, etc...

if you want to "perfect or dial in" the number so you could potentially hole out that shots versus getting close... then going out and finding a spot and mapping it for a more precise number obviously helps and is what I understand the best players in the game do... because after all they are looking for every small edge or advantage... so holing out shots from missed greens etc becomes possible because they start to read the green as well as if it was a putt after they identify their landing zone... those lucky hole outs become a combination of knowing their clubs and reading the green like a putt and is less luck for them as opposed to the rest of us who are just trying to get the ball close to save par and a big number...

@el3n1   That is a good tip. I am horrible about keeping notes, but your tip got me to thinking about how easy it would be to just add this info to my the punch chart. The chart is the popular one that has been passed around for the Cleveland 64. I use it all the time. I had never thought about adding my own notes to it until now. lol

P.S. If anyone knows where that punch chart originally came from, I would love to send the creator of it a thank you.

I am not sure if I have it, I could look since I don't use the clevelands but I have considered adding it to my bag given I have heard and read something was out there... if I read correctly, I believe the chart that was shared was done so by Jo (walkoflife).  He of course could confirm that.
