Any thoughts on the new hole locations at Oakmont?

The announcement suggested we could choose to practice just on the new locations, but all the practice options seemed to offer a mix of some kind or other of old and new.

Trying a ranked round of 18 from the Legend tees, I got new locations on holes 4, 5, 8, 10 and 17. These were of approximately similar difficulty to the older locations.

I just had time to play the back 9 and got the new pins on 10, 14, 17, &18.

I thought that 3 of the 4 pins were easier than the original......14 was the only pin that to me didn't really appear either harder or easier.....I really like the new pins on 17&18.

easier approach now on 18 and easier putts to me now on both 17&18

The new pin on #9 is about 20-25 ft left of the old pin and much more accessable.

Here's some of the front 9 new pin locations. Click for a bigger pic.

Nice Andy. Do you have anything similar for STA?

Job, Andy. The 18th pin is in the sun! It looks like the back got longer, too, except for 18.

Trying two ranked rounds today there seems to be a pretty good mix of pin placements.

Like the new placements but not sure whether they have always been classified right.  I have played front 9 in both Practice mode (with Easy hole settings) and matchplay (Legend v Legend) today.

On hole 2 for example, the easy setting keeps the hole in it's original place, high up on the left on the edge of a vertiginous drop.  The harder setting moves it to it's new place low down on the right, much more accessible.

The same applies on hole 6 (the par 3), where the harder setting is the original - pretty straightforward towards the back of the green.  The easy setting has the new placement on the front edge, a shorter distance but very little green to work with at all.

Overall I think this 9 at least has got easier for the better players.
