Help with approach on 4th hole Royal St George's

  Hi Folks.....I just can't seem to figure out the approach shot to this green and I was wondering if there was anyone that has mastered it. If there is a strong head wind it's a lot easier but failing that it's very difficult to get the ball close to the hole. It seems to have something to do with the angle into the green, and how that relates to the wind. There is such a small landing area if you want to get it close. Any tips?

  Hi theorioles.

  Just looked at your equipment, you sould try the Burner 2.0 level 79 irons a littel faster meter but you can hit backspin with 3 iron and it stops much faster in downwind, and buy the clevland wegdes they STOP the ball, the 60 64 degree hits backspin downwind if you pull the dot down.

  only thing i know is better to be longer then short on this hole lol. the chip to the pin or pitch is alot easier then the massive uphill putt!!

  If you practice with the CTTH St.Georges hole 4, the long putt is on there so maybe that will help the long putts.I agree with paulshack though going long it is much easier to chip back.

  I've punched some nice shots close downwind.

  But my normal spot is on the fringe/rough behind the hole, once you get the chip down you'll be birdie, or very close to the hole.  Depending on speed, my chip breaks about 1.5 feet, putt about 2 feet.

  I prefer to use full backspin and usually use 1 club more to make sure I get up the ridge on the green.The BS  enables the ball to check quickly on the green.

  It doesn't usually roll back because you are usually hitting a med to long iron into the green.

  I always approach from the left side as the ball runs nicely up to the hole coming in from this angle.

  If there is a strong cross wind from the right say 20MPH then I would play the wind as if it was 15 MPH and this will take me slightly left of pin which I believe is the way to approach this green.Again coming in from my favourite angle.

  You have a small window for perfection on this hole,within 5 ft(with side or tailwind) will roll clearly passed the hole.If you are to short the hill will catch it and it will not roll to the hole.Clubs and balls play a huge roll here.If you are left of the pin the ball will roll from left to rt,but you have to make sure to clear the hump with enough club.For me,I try to not use to much backspin here to make sure I at least get to the hole or just passed for an easier putt.Hope this helps.

  the perfect shot with a long/mid iron would be to hit into the upslope just at the top of the ridge, left of the pin, to really check the ball, and have it roll down and right toward the hole. fuhgettaboutit. full bs, clear the ridge but not by too far, roll past the pin, easy chip, 1 putt.

  Ya. Backspin on a shot into this area will give you that CTTH shot 84+ feet away at the bottom. Playing up the left side of the circle with top spin can get a favorable roll down to the hole, much like what Leon is referring to. This is also one of the holes where the R11 long irons make a big difference.

  The shot is to get it to land at top of ridge with some backspin. Ball will still kick forward a bit, but should stop within 18ft. If you have a strong tailwind, then you will probably end up in fringe behind green. So practice that chip

  Also note as can be seen in YankeeJim's screen shot, the slope is less severe on right side of green.

  As with most holes with a long 2nd shot, it plays much easier into the wind.
