    Infinito3010:

Players were relying on the wedge alot especially when putts approaching 50 feet or so.  The shot essentially removes any break in the putt and allows you to hit the ball essentially at the hole knowing the ball is not going to roll much.

    I agree,

When faced with a 3 putt or worse I could drop the ball within a couple (1-3) feet of the hole and save par.

After the change it seems that it will be easier to ACTUALLY sink the shot instead of just saving a stroke.

Point in fact....There is no virtual greenkeeper to kick my avatar's butt. Some people like to pitch and chip on the green, some don't.So,put the damn spot back on the ball and everyone then has the option of using it or not.If this game was as real as possible then we could pitch or putt on the green AND..the balls would last more than 2 or 3 rounds.Do something about that WGT !!

Abouttwice the distance plus half again  renni.full backspin.with practice you can get it real close every time.Allow a little for the wind.worth noting too....a 50 yaaaaard punch goes exaaactly 30 yds.withot the spot on the ball it is not very easy.BRING IT BACK.

Speaking as a sub 10 handicapper in real life, they are making the game more realistic. To impart backspin on the ball it would require a longer shot and/or a divot in the green. Thus, no dot on the ball any more. Even Phil Mickelson usually hits flops that run out a few feet when using a wedge on the green. He's arguably the best in the world at wedge play.

As for ball life, many distance balls will last longer than two rounds when hit with the less force and not so sharp grooves that the average player hits it with. Top quality balls with softer covers see performance deteriorate pretty quickly when hit "full bore" with top quality clubs and grooves.

Then Hokie Fan would question your handicap.

Question all you want. It doesn't change the physics of the shot itself. Either the swing has to be forceful enough to compress enough of the cover for the grooves to grab the ball cover and spin it fast enough to bite or the ball must be struck with a descending blow. The result is either a longer shot or a divot.

It appears we are no longer able to spin the ball on the green with wedge shots (the dot is no longer there to adjust).  Given that this shot is within the rules of golf, why the change in WGT play?

No one says you can't use the shot, you just can't dial up the spin. You can't dial up spin by adjusting a dot on your ball in real life, can you?

Zag are you suggesting wgt remove the spin dot on the ball from the fairway? Seeing how you cant use a spin dot IRL golf.

No, but actually that is not a bad idea. As srellim just mentioned, (back)spin comes from clubhead speed, angle, etc. Stopping long irons on a dime--or ordering a shot to come out with topspin, etc.--is not very realistic, if you look at it that way.

Y a sure about about  that?

What you have experienced or read?

Ever play from a green side bunker?

    Dang!  No compression..

    What ya say now?

Spin on the ball is just that.

Sorry for intruding back at ya squabbles.
