I just hit a drive on St Andy's #10, the distance of the hole was 366 yards, my drive went 366 yards yet it was 14 yards PAST the hole, staright above it (not left or right).  My drive went in a total straight line, "how the crow fly's" so how was it my 366 yard drive was 14 yards MORE than the distance to pin when pin is 366 yards too?

I tried it out on Bethpage #1, distance to pin 430, i click on the dot on tee, it says 396 yards, next hole (congressional par #5,playing best of ready go) distance to pin in top right says 555 yards but my dot on tee says 557. Fascinating.lol

reason being.....the yardage of 366 yards on the card is due to the fact, that hole has been measured out as if you were to walk right up the middle of the hole, hence not straight to the hole.....and since your drive went direct, as to how the crow flies, this will take yardage off the card distance

    not quite correct steve

the yardage on the card is a walk up the middle yes, but the card is also based on a generic tee position (normally the tee marker) and hole position (centre of the green)

daily those position will change, but the card will not.

open the picture in a new tab to see full size

all holes on wgt have variable positions, note the different flag position here for the straight st andrew 1st hole, the top right hand corner is set to "card" distance

after the first shot the number in the top right will reset itself and be the correct distance to the hole.

for the tee shot ( especially drivable par 4's or those with hazards in reach ) check the blue dot first before hitting.

i still forget to look sometimes, even though i'm always pointing it out to others :)

btw, st andrews number 10 is a "straight" hole, any amount of trying to offset the angle of drive to approach shot will add no more than 2 yards to the overall length.

When you turn Legend it doesn't matter anymore, you can't drive any of those holes from the tees we play from.  I have seen and understand what you are talking about.  It's the same as the 'scorecard' distance in real golf, that is from a fixed tee box to the center of the green.  Obviously the tee box on any course can move up or back by 10 to 15 yards and so can the pin placement.
