If you are going by istinct and you are still a good player, you are a genius.

The more you play this game, the more you start to play by instinct. I rarely use the notes I have saved anymore.

Dar, I wouldn't say it's instinct as much as it is the overall result of sheer repetition weighed by whether it turned out well, or failed to meet expectations. Instinct, to me, sounds a bit like using.... "the force".

Did someone say something about the force? I must agree with DarSum. I never really took notes to begin with. And now that I have been at this for nearly two years, with all of the courses, (the exception obviously would be Olympic) I go by feel. Well, when it comes to lining up a putt I do. All other shots, once you learn the courses inside and out, you know that wherever you land, you know exactly what club, shot, and how much power to use almost right away. Just takes time and patience and knowledge of the "force".

And to the original poster of this thread, there are no shortcuts to Legend. If you do make it to Legend on ONE course, you'll pack it in soon after. The enjoyment of teeing off on new courses that WGT puts out would not be there as you would only know how to play the one course. And all these courses play a little bit differently. So do yourself a favor. Play ALL of the courses and learn them inside and out. Learn what your clubs can and can't do. Learn to use ALL of the different shots. (Pitch, flop, chip, punch, full) And learn when to use spin. Front and back and everything in between. It's going to take time. Depending on your skill level and how fast or slow you learn depends on how much time. In the end, you'll appreciate the game MUCH MUCH more. Good luck to ya going forward. And may the force be with you!

I can only add another vote for the Play all the courses and don't be in too much of a hurry party.  If you're still at a fairly low level when you become legend you're probably going to hate the game.  There are a few holes where you tee off from 80+ yards further back, without good clubs it's going to be pretty depressing.  There are a few threads here from players who tiered up quickly and found life from legend tees too difficult with the gear available to them.

On the other subject in this thread, up until a few months ago I was a seat of the pants golfer; no notes, no formulas at all.  I still have no notes but have started using a formula for cross winds that really works and has done wonders for my approach shots in windy conditions.  It only takes a few seconds to work out and aim properly.

I'm sure there are many players with reams of notes on every possible lie and shot but, in all honesty, I can't be bothered.

I'm looking for the perfect shot's formula.

And your secret for crosswinds is????

I remember back in 2009 when Bethpage was released and on hole #5, with the only clubs available at the time, you couldn't reach the fairway... but would fall short into the sand.  There was one secret one player divulged:  Hit a very accurate drive to the most distant island in the sand and your ball would riccochet off and land in the fairway.  Such silliness.  Try that hole from Championship tees with a beginner driver sometime!

And by the way, do you happen to know a gentleman named Faterson?

Well, Allen, the "force" certainly wasn't with me out of that bunker in SD the other night in the AS match with you and RD.  lol  Crazy ass game.....

Leaving aside my curiosity about the formula, you pointed out the essence of this toy: the only 2 things which make sense: study just to get a strategy and play for fun.
