Using Irons on the green

  I have played over 1100 match play challenge matches. I have come across several players who use a wedge on the green when they are in a tough spot...with this said I have lost only once to a player using this method on the green. My advice is this...learn how to play the game at a high level giving yourself birdie putts that you can make  and you will come out on top 99% of the time. I have played against the very best in this game and never have they used the wedge on the green against me...that should tell you something.

  And it has nothing to do with my putting skills as im a decent putter, i just play the percentages i look at the putt say a 19ft heavy breaker oak #1 if i think i could hole with the putter say 2 from 5 or hole with wedge 4 from 5 then i take the wedge as its the percentage shot, i understand this may offend certain players and if so feel free to decline a game with me for this reason 

   

  on a side note i never use a wedge for the long putts (some players use it as a way to guarantee a 2 putt where as i only use from short range when trying to bird the hole

  as i said i understand if these shots offend people and also understand if that means i go on a no play list of certain players. but its within the rules and i refuse to change how i enjoy a game to please others

  2 nice shots but they would have been easier with a putter.  That one at Oakmont would have flown past if it had missed the hole.  If you want to the the wedge then fine, but learn to put and you'll have a higher success rate on those shots than you would with a wedge.

  It's all about personal preferences. 

  There aren't that many people who use it regularly.  That being said, there are a few spots on here where wedges are a must use. 

  For example, if you are on St. Andrews 17, and barely roll up to the green with the back pin, you have no other option other than to wedge it.

  There's no rule that states you can't do it.

  Hi,do you need a specific wedge to use on the greens,I've tried with my cleveland wedge and my ball just trickled a couple of inches even though I gave it a full swing.Thank you.

  I absolutely doubt they designed ANY green that big with the thought that ha people will use their wedge here  come on people. I believe that was your penalty for hitting a terrible approach shot!!!!

  This has been a good post. Interesting to read all the opinions on this subject.

  I have to clarify what I said previously. 

  I would always use the Putter on the green except if i'm in a situation where it's just about impossible to putt. Like what's been said before St.a #2, in the valley of doom, in the front of green. Putting over that hill can be a disaster. St.A #17, when at the front of green with the fringe/rough between you and the pin. Just two holes that come to mind.

  Somebody asked before how to use it.....

  30yrd putt, using my C64 Wedge, Full B/Spin, Full Shot(60yrd)... Ding and Nike Ball. Depending on wind most of the time this would be awfully close to the hole if not in. I have also used it for a 16yrd Putt and that's about a 3 Qtr swing. Just remember wind and roll on green will affect this shot too.

  The wedge shot on the green also counts as 1 putt on your card. Takes a bit of practice.

  Perhaps you should practice it yourself, same as you have to for putting. It isn't easy chipping into the hole 50% of the time, but some of us can, and do. How? We practiced it same as you practiced putting. Get over it.  This isn't golf, its a half-assed golf GAME.  LMFAO

  I use the cleve 60 wedge. Get out onto a green with your wedge and use full shot, give yourself lots of room to map it out. Hit it full with full backspin, mark down the distance. Do it again, this time 1 avatar movement from the top, mark down the distance. I have a chart that maps out my shots from 1.5 feet being 1 avatar movement UP, all the way to 81-82 feet for full shot. The distances are quite accurate and dependable, and make my game much more enjoyable.

  Can I putt?? Yes, but not great, and I get really sick of the greens with no breaks, or break opposite of what they say, chipping takes the break OUT for the most part.
