Although, not a free course, i'd have to say, the hardest and most despised is Chateau Whistler. Two times playing full 18 holes, the same hole, can't remember which one, lost 3 ball's each time. The free one's? Merion and Olympic. Kiawah is a favorite, although, not super easy, I  seem to do fairly well playing that course.

There's two ways of tackling that problem if I remember correctly, when u don't have a tailwind. Tee off down the left side, there is a small strip of fairway there, or down the middle with ur tee shot and then punch ur hybrid full power, whatever the lie and whatever the distance.

    SuperWristy:

Have to say Olympic. So darn hard to hit those stupid tilting fairways with nasty deep rough.

As for hardest hole, I'd go with 7 at St. Andrews. I don't have a good driver and end up in the gorse short of the fairway EVERY SINGLE TIME. Stinks. A bogey is a miracle for me on that hole.

Merion is probably the toughest course for me, but  the pin placement on #4 at Whistler has made me angry several times. I'm sure I've missed more 2 footers there than all the other holes I've played put together. 3,4 or even 5 putts are not out of the question.  It's kind of disgusting really.
