Thank you Overtheedge and JimBean for your thoughts!  As I said...

It's all a tricky balancing act to maintain accessibility whilst still maintaining challenge to the upper tier of players. I think we have a great format for the vast majority of the players, but with each major tournament... we always learn something new & strive to improve it in the tournies to follow.

    Keep the good input coming!

will still be on the top of the leaderboard....

i applaud those that can shoot the super low scores, and understand the time they have invested in being able to do so...

How good was Tiger thru the first 5 Holes?

He played them great....for -2....doesnt this course offer a challege from tee to green.

Reverse cambering doglegs....Tight teeing routes....... length and accuracy combined with placement ..........

Having played it for 3 months on WGT and then watching it on TV.... it is just as much fun as with the other courses I have been able to do the same with......JUST SO MUCH FUN!!

I think the winner will be max    -5.... if the wind doesn't really blow.....if it does...ALL BETS OFF!!

Although you don't win 14 majors with 3 British Opens included and be a bad wind player

Tiger is from the West Coasts and Understands the type of course he is playing

plus he is the SUPREME shot maker and MAKER!!

I don't think Tiger will hold up the cup at the end of the day on Sunday.

The US Open is the most difficult test in golf and I think that should a little wind come up, the winner will be around even par.  The greens are going to get harder and faster, the rough will get worse.  Tiger is a good fast greens putter (or was)....he now is experiencing some of what Tom Watson did in his later career.  He was a bang it in putter who never worried if he hit it 5 feet by because he never missed from 5 feet.  Once you get a little older those 5 footers aren't so easy and they effect how you hit your first putt.  Tiger is in that stage right now.

As far as Olympic Club, I am not a fan. The reverse sloping doglegs are just a sign of a poor design.  There are at least 4 holes that you are required to aim 30 yards left or right over huge trees to find the fairway, that isn't golf.  The greens are better than they were in the previous 2 Opens but still have some places that are just not a fair pin.  The 16th hole is just too long.  670 with that tight a fairway and no real ability to cut off distance is too much.

The weekend will be fun to watch but only because it is a US Open not because of the course they are using this year.

I like that you are here Chad, in the forums :-)

Perhaps a tricky balancing act would be to make everyone concentrate harder on their game by making the opens single play. Your point about the sweepstake would still of course be valued and valid, but would this not open up a whole new ball game based upon what a person can do on the day, rather than reflect a dedication remarkable only for the dogged desperation displayed by those who choose to use the competition as practice unless they achieve a remarkable score? (as opposed to merely practicing, and then having their one and only go at the event)

Imagine the joy you could stimulate on an unknowns face were they to have the round of their life, and find themselves among the greats?

    Hi Lizzie!

But in contrast, what a shame it would be if some of the best players here got metered a few times a round and missed the cut because of it?

I understand limiting the quals to some degree though.

why do some players feel like if the game gets any harder it wouldn't be as fun?

is real golf less fun because you can't shoot under par?  or more likely, can't shoot in the single digits over par?

plenty of players in real life shoot well over par and yet are addicted and keep going back week after week, because they know it is a challenge and it is fun

I would like to see a couple of weeks of practice on the course and then a more limited qualifying time.

Not just 1 or 2 attempts but maybe no more than a dozen including restarts.   I was attempting to qualify the other day, got off with 4 birdies in a row then got metered into the trees and ended up with a double bogey so definitely one attempt isn't the answer

    +1

Very good point, well made; unfortunately as this is a game played on a computer, many people who can't break records or win a tournament every time they hit a round always see fault in the product they are using. IMO the more challenging, the better; the more I have to think about what I'm doing, the better.

I'm very much in favour of making the game harder but for a specific tier of player (probably sub-60 legend). The game should not change for the masses as they (so to speak) haven't mastered their craft yet (no offence meant to players in this bracket). Surely it would give a further incentive to players to want to tier up to a stage where the game becomes radically different and more challenging?

I agree totally with your suggestion........
