Hence the "frowned upon" part.   Still doesn't make it against the rules.  ;-)

Zach Johnson chipping on the green LAST WEEK at the Chevron. No divot, no penalty, no rabid greenskeeper beating him with an old 1 iron. Nice shot.

Chip/pitch on a green???  First of all why would you want to and second, would you do this on a real green???  Come on people focus, anyone doing this on any real life course would be very quickly shown the way to the parking lot and the same goes here.  Keep it real people!!!

You obviously do not play real golf...

The Rules of Golf allow the use of any golf club to play any golf shot. If you want, you can tee off using a putter and putt using a driver.

I played Pete Dye Golf Club in W. Virginia for a charity event this past spring. There are greens there that have more swales than RSG and St. Andrews fairways because the course was built on an old coal mine. If you landed an approach on the front of green (right bunker), you had no choice but to pitch it and hope you got remotely close to the pin; putting it would have been a disaster. The greens were wet and the ball would not roll off - they just stuck. Lol

This is a pic of one of those greens on that lovely rainy morning. Take note of the flag (it sits in a valley with a severe slope just behind it)  and the green size.

    +11!

As an exception, you may not use ANY club on a wrong green, Rule 25-3.

Those examples of Phil and Zach show some creativity, and this is one part of the game that I like. See Bubba here in Hawaii - I LOVE that second shot!

I do practice this one fairly often but usually fail to hit it 330 yds ;)

I did it once, when I had left my bag behind and taken two clubs to putt on one hole and drive from the next tee in reverse direction. Fellow players jokingly asked me, "Do you intend to use the putter from the tee?", and I thought about playing a putter bogey on that short Par 4 of 245 m (270 yds?). The tee putt went some 100+ m to the fairway, and after a lay-up, the third might have reached the green. Alas, I shanked the second to the right, behind a lake, and the dream was over. Big fun though!

Well, if you are able to run faster than the greenkeeper ...

OTOH, there are no greenkeepers on WGT courses, and using the irons doesn't even leave a divot on the virtual greens, other than on the areas around the greens.

BTW: WGT has deliberately allowed those shots, and they did not exclude them two(?) years ago when the spin option was removed from them.

So, why *** around again and again?

I agree with you. It may not be against the rules technically but it is against the spirit of the game.

Full power and double the distance.....now when playing if someone "chips on green" I give them one(yes its legal) and if they do it a second time I just conceded.Obvious if a player wants to "chip" every putt shot then they cant putt so thats why they do it.

Someone did it in US Open after they broke a few clubs lol!

As for putting, most players prefer it as its way more reliable (from off the green too)
