If you get a chance check out the Google Maps' satellite view of Desert Falls Country Club in Palm Desert, CA. They have no less than 5 greens that are designed in ways that can force a player on the green to use a wedge to get over the thick rough between their ball and the hole. While they usually place the pin in very accessible places for the daily golfers to get to them on most, one par 3 green is designed as three large "spokes" and the pin has never been in the center when I've played there.
I've hit wedge multiple times on real-life greens but never taken a divot. When I've been watched while doing it I usually get a "thumbs-up" from the greenskeepers when they see the clean pick.
