Least favourite hole?

  For me it just has to be the 2nd at St Andrews .... I've just never found that pin position...  just over the bank protecting the front of the green ... its ALWAYS there taunting me ... I have nightmares about it! Any suggestions most welcome. The one time I just carried it recently the ball looked like it was rolling down to the hole ... but no ... it stopped 7 feet shot and wouldn't you know I overhit the downhill putt by nearly twice that distance! I need a punchbag next to the laptop.

  I recommend you keep your approach shot right of the pin for an uphill putt.

  I try to land my approach right and just a bit short of the pin, though the safest play may be right and a bit long to avoid the back side of that hump in front of the pin.

  A somewhat long approach shot when the pin is further left is also desirable.

  At St. Andrews, if a putt is downhill I adjust my putt distance (strength) in feet by 1.5x  to 2x the downhill value. If the putt is 6 inches down I subtract 9 to 12 feet from the putt. distance. The more break in the putt, the more iIsubtract from the distance.

  Hit it right of the pin, hopefully leving yourself an uphill putt, i've made more birdies this way, rather than tying to attck the pin and 3 putting on occassions due to the break of putt.

  I've had the best luck playing that shot well left of the pin (Try to hug the left side of the fairway. The further right in the fairway I end up, the less I play it left of pin) and figure about 2-3 yards of extra distance. The slope of the green will bring it right back to the hole. I haven't holed that approach, yet, but I've lipped it out about a half a dozen times. Usually leaves a pretty straightforward uphill putt coming back for birdie.

  Not much chance of getting close with your clubs, you need a ton of spin to stop your ball there. The best way IMO is to aim a couple of yards left of pin and a couple of yards short with full BS. Should roll down right next to the hole (with a bit of luck).

  It becomes an easy par at least from legend tees. Much more difficult from master tees though (one of the few holes that's shorter for legends). Playing on the green with a 4 or 3 iron leaves less room for mistakes and if you're just a bit long and end up on the top of thegreen, you'll be left with either an almost certain 3 putt, or a lucky downhill birdie (actually managed to sink it once). I hate the 9th on Oakmont (right pin) much more. For me a par there is a very good score.

  The 9th at Oakmont is the hardest on WGT, nearly impossible to get close with the approach, and only to easy to at LEAST 3 putt. The 15th at BPB is tough but I would rather play this than the 9th at Oakmont
