Any Master's have any tricks on putting on the slippery green's on Oakmont? It is very hard to stop the ball and putt..

I found something that works for me. Speed of the putt is key and if you use the avatar move method to figure this what I started doing is figuring the moves like normal but cancelling the last move. By that I mean if you're figuring 2 moves for a putt, cancel the second move so that you're just under it. I believe it translates to about a 2 ft difference but I didn't prove that.

On stopping the shots, the mid to long irons are tough to stop so play short and roll up where you can. Be careful doing that though because some of the greens run uphill to the pin or run uphill, crest a rise and then roll down.

The wedges seem to do a pretty good job with backspin, you just have to watch where it lands. Hope this helps.

BTW-I tried to find a relatively flat green to practice putting on. Heh-played all 18 and still looking-OIY!

i posted a thread but ill add this here. Just make it the next notch. If you hit 50% to get it that far on regular, then say 40 % to get it that far on very fast. Start with 30% for that far here. Then just work it up or down. You will find the groove pretty quick. Its just hte next faster setting

also, hit your line. I dont know if its just the speed or WGT chose to do so, but even the slightest miss of excellent putting will push it just off the hole. Focus and hit your mark

I think unless you are really trying to go low, choose your battles.  Some holes you can attack for birdie, some you need to play it really safe for par.  I think for day 1 right now, just try to play the course and find the spots that are below the hole, even if that means leaving a chip instead of a putt.  I made 8 birdies and I cant explain how, except that each one probably would have rolled 10 to 12 ft had I missed.  My thoughts are like this: 15ft putt, 6 inches down, on very fast would play it like 8 or 9ft on the meter (6 inches equating to roughly 6ft of roll), now will probably play the same 6 inches down like 9ft of roll, so only go back probably 6 or 7ft on meter.  15ft with 4 inches uphill on very fast I would play like 20-21ft, on tournament speed will probably play it barely over 16ft.  So in my mind I am play the height adjustment like 50% of what I would normally would do.

That probably makes no sense, but it does to me somehow.

    This will get you close.

For every inch of incline or decline add or subtract one foot of distance. Now take 30% off that number. There you go.

eg. 13 foot putt 3 inches down.

    13-3=10  30% of 10 is 3 so hit the putt 7 feet.

Take note if your putt has tons of break you are hitting it much further than the stated distance but for reasonably straight putts the numbers are good.

WTH is tournament speed, I think the more appropriate name should be:

I managed 71 after several tries at it.  Very challeging with the tees all the way back.  The greens won't hold like usual.  So it's playing alot like a link course would probably play - approching short and rolling up on the green.  As for putting, well, outside of 15' I'm just trying for par.  Did make one 35' birdie, but also missed several 6' birdies.  Best of luck!
