Oh, here we go again!
Come on folks! If you just dived into this TL Unevens tourney without spending some time practicing Unevens, what do you seriously expect?
You didn't reach the highest levels of the game overnight, did you… ? No, you came up gradually through the tiers, accruing knowledge as you went along. You can't expect to bolt on Unevens on top of all that, and make an instant adjustment.
In my opinion, you have to treat Unevens as if it's a whole new game, which it is! For a start, practice with LOW wind, so that you're removing at least one of the variables. Better still, try it with Starter Clubs and balls, as that's how you learned the game in the first place. Doing that will give you the strongest basis for seeing the effect of the lies.
In tiffer's screenshot example above, dare I say it, you shouldn't have been there in the first place. This seems like a classic instance where laying back to a mid-short iron distance on a flatter, fairway lie, would have been more prudent than the driver to wedge distance. If you miss the fairway with Unevens, change your expectations about getting close on approach. Do the Pros expect to knock it stiff out of the rough in a U.S. Open? I don't think so...
I know there's a lot of fear here… You've all gotten extremely good at this game, and along comes a development that feels as if you're back at square one. Well, perhaps you are. But you're up for a challenge, right? Something that will reward skill, and judgment more than a dependence on which winds you get, and whether VEM will strike you down. (Perhaps with Unevens in play, WGT could even turn VEM off!? Wouldn't that make everyone happy?!!!) Do you really want the game to be all about throwing darts?
OK, rant over!
If anyone really cares to read a long diatribe of my thoughts on this subject go see
this post I made at the beginning of December, including
an appeal to declare how often you've played Unevens, and reserve judgement until you've had at least a dozen rounds under your belt!
