Wow, lot of attention for a new driver that hits the whole 3 yards, thats 1000 credits per yard, further than the last top model.

And yep, I bought it. My game was going nowhere, so experimenting a bit with the equipment. At the same time i changed my R11 3 wood for a G20 3 wood solely because it has the same feel, otherwise known as meterspeed.

I always wondered and even asked wgt why there was a difference in meterspeed between R11 driver, 2 wood and Irons and of course got no answer. At least driver and wood are the same now and together with the far too expensive Max balls give me an increase on dings or neardings. Sadly my putting is still crap :-)

It's not so much the extra 3 yards but the combination of extra distance, extra forgiveness and slower meter that's most interesting.

Unfortunately I will have a long wait before it's available to me.

Bigtime! I'm one of those lazy drivers that step up and whack it and the driving stats show this. Meh, no big deal. The R1 changes that quite a bit. Missed hits with no spin are still running up to 300 in the fairway, even into the wind and I'm only using the spinner Callaway with just 3 dots of distance. Can't imagine how the Nike will smoke it..

The forgiveness doesn't make sense to me at all. You would think it should be harder to hit. Mind you, I ain't complaining but this is a little curious.

    O to the Poor Golfer

I hit the ball into the air

Where it lands I do not care

Balls go left and then they go right

    Only WGT determines the flight

YOUR swing bar is the equivalent to some clown standing behind you waiting to sneeze. No fun in that!

    DAZZA501:

It's not the clubs that enable you to compete with the best, it's your ability as a player.

This is true, I won't argue with you at all.  However, there are a very few situations where a handful of extra yards will make a big difference.  Off the top of my head BPB #4 comes to mind.  With a few extra yards off the tee going for the hole in 2 will become a safer shot and will result in more eagles.  At the moment I pretty much always play to the right of the green with a 4 or 5 iron and punch it close for birdie.  Going for the green is an option when the flag is towards the back and I've hit a good drive which usually means there was some tail wind which then makes stopping on the green that bit harder.  Good old catch 22.

This driver won't be game changing like the R11 irons were but it will make a difference to scores.

It's not a few yards though. The newer R11 driver suggests a distance of 284 yards, we all know that the driver carries 300 yards unless into a wind. The original R11 was the step up from the old R9 driver, 282 yards compared with 280 and that was a step up from the Super Tri at 278 yards.

So over the last year or so the driver capabilities for distance have gone from 278 yards to 287 yards, 9 yards of extra distance. Utter bollox and I'll prove why.

Take Sebicu, a great player, one of the best around but not a player whose stats are hindered by having to use any of the older clubs as he joined in November 2011. His average drive is 302 yards and that is before he is able to add the extra yardage achieved by the latest driver. Average drive is 18 yards longer than the stated yardage of the previous best R11.

I hate sounding like a negative old grouch on these matters but making available a new, longer driver that is easier to hit and more forgiving is just reckless behaviour for the long term good of this game and this strategy needs a serious rethink.

WGT may well have their nuts in a vice over this because of contractual obligations to Taylor Made. If that is the case then they need to give themselves a good boot up the *** for putting money ahead of the general good of the game. This is only going to switch off, in time, those players who have been the heaviest users of the game for the last 3 years.

I can only imagine since I have at least a year until that driver (and I doubt very much that this game exists in it's current form by then), but my current G20 driver is so forgiving it sometimes feel ridiculous. 1.5 dots more...

Oh well, I am not complaining either, but it feels like WGT does not know what leg they should stand on. They add unpredictability on one hand, to make the game more difficult, and then they make clubs that make it easier. I guess from a sales point of view it makes sense, but I would argue that it would make more sense if we had to make choices, choose between set 1 that is a bit more forgiving or set 2 that is a bit more agile or set 3 that has plenty spin but goes a bit shorter... many times I think we would end up buying all three. At lower levels that is still the case, but at higher levels there is not much to choose from so everybody ends up with the same gear. Ok, Cleveland vs ATV, that is a choice.

How it is and is quite simple really.

Player 1 uses Rap driver hits 265.

    Player 2 uses R1 driver hits 310.

Both players hit there 2nd shot to 15ft.

Player 1 is a good putter (makes his putt)

Player 2 is not a good putter (misses his putt)

(Overall) a few yards of the tee is not going to make much of difference if you cant putt to save your life.
