It's not a few yards though. The newer R11 driver suggests a distance of 284 yards, we all know that the driver carries 300 yards unless into a wind. The original R11 was the step up from the old R9 driver, 282 yards compared with 280 and that was a step up from the Super Tri at 278 yards.
So over the last year or so the driver capabilities for distance have gone from 278 yards to 287 yards, 9 yards of extra distance. Utter bollox and I'll prove why.
Take Sebicu, a great player, one of the best around but not a player whose stats are hindered by having to use any of the older clubs as he joined in November 2011. His average drive is 302 yards and that is before he is able to add the extra yardage achieved by the latest driver. Average drive is 18 yards longer than the stated yardage of the previous best R11.
I hate sounding like a negative old grouch on these matters but making available a new, longer driver that is easier to hit and more forgiving is just reckless behaviour for the long term good of this game and this strategy needs a serious rethink.
WGT may well have their nuts in a vice over this because of contractual obligations to Taylor Made. If that is the case then they need to give themselves a good boot up the *** for putting money ahead of the general good of the game. This is only going to switch off, in time, those players who have been the heaviest users of the game for the last 3 years.
