thanks for replying guys ..... as a newbie it helps to know...... what would you suggest playing on with limited skills and clubs and balls ...

You get better faster if you play the hardest courses the most.

    Sorry, I disagree with this.

My thinking is, if you play the hardest courses first....   It destroys your confidence.

Learn the game playing the easy courses first and have fun at the same time..  then branch out.  Still play all the courses, but stick to 2 or 3 easy courses mostly.

My List with low to medium winds (agree with Born's list for heavy)

    Oly

    Merion

    Cong

    Best of Hardest

    Kia

    Rsg

    Oak

    Best of Famous

    St.A

    Beth

    Cabo

I don't play Whistler after finding the lost 'City of Atlantis' after a stray shot...lol

This also depends on clubs,  wind and green speed

I'd put Olympic Club as being the toughest course, I've always found it difficult to find birdies there (except 7, which for me right now is 3-wood, 64 degree).  I wouldn't say that Merion is difficult actually because of the comedy that is 7-13.  As such, Oakmont is more difficult that Merion, heck maybe even Congressional is tougher.  Bethpage is unique in that it can be the toughest or easiest course for a player depending on how good their equipment is.  St Andrews and RSG meanwhile are all about the winds but in theory they're amongst the easier courses in the game if the winds don't blow.  And Kiawah... is kind of in the middle, for the most part it's easy but there are some tough holes in there (coughthepar3scough).

I've always found Oakmont the most difficult, at all levels irrespective of wind. Still do and #9 is a killer. Olympic was so different when it first appeared and its still really tough in the lower levels. Royal St George is up there with the worst. It just seems to behave completely differently. St Andrews is almost impossible with a heavy wind but quite tame with low winds. Bethpage was impossible at lower levels but I think that was before I learned about spin. These days its not too bad. Merion needs some thought to get around and the greens are difficult. So many different opinions but I have found spin and forgivable equipment the most useful for my game.

Hands down for me it's Whistler... I can shoot 7 under on the front only to struggle for 3 birds on the back, or vice versa. The greens are insane at any speed ...

You really have to know that course well and be able to put your approaches in makeable putting spots. I don't know it that well yet.

Basically the one's I feel are the toughest are the courses that I'm hitting fairway woods and long irons into the majority of the par 4's.. with the exception being Merion which is a tough little bugger without the distance.

I play almost all rounds with either tournament or very fast greens.

    1.  Merion
    2. Oakmont
    3. Olympic
    4. Bethpage
    5. RSG
    6.. Congressional

    Easy: Kiawah, St Andrews
