This hole which is 134 I think from the Legend tees is a really mystery.

I was 11 under going into it on one of my attempts to qualify for the US Open.  Had a very slight wind into me, hit my 135 club full with full backspin and went into the back bunker, no way out, into the 80% round, hack, hack, hack.  Ended up with a 9 and a ruined round.  The very next attempt I got to this hole with about the same conditions and aced it with the same shot.

One of my WGT friends suggested a punch shot here and I've been a little more successful with it, at least not going long.  Quirks all around this hole as well as hole #5 which should just be plowed up, at least the green.

I found so far, no matter wind - hole always seems to be 130 off Legend tees -

    courteneyfish:

I find I use punch on Merion more than any other course. I even punch a few drives on the short fairways.

As noted by you and others, punch is good strategy on 13 and I use it where I need less wind deviation at the expense of yardage. There's a number of Merion holes and some at other courses (SA, RSG, Oly), where placement of drives trumps overall yardage, when punching your drive can be a nice solution to ease wind effects and manage terrain in landing area.

One 'problem' Merion 13 presents is that wind effects are modified by those trees behind the green. Impact of both direct headwinds (coming from Noon on a clock-face) and direct tailwinds (coming from 6 o'clock behind the tee box) is less than expected (50%?) due to the green being in a partial 'wind-shadow' - if the wind direction is cross- or quartering' I dial in a more 'normal' wind drift correction.

The hole plays 134 punch and you control the wind with spin.
