  what happened ?  i never understood why F1 forces the use of different compounds ...

  Massive rear left failures...that can't be coincidental !!

  And diff compounds were introduced and the need to use two diff types during the race unless it rains, was to encourage overtaking / pitting etc..to make F1 more exciting..but of course F1 teams started to design their 'wings' to look after the tyres...So Pirelli were given the task of having great tyres but that they only last for the designated time whatever the teams did to the cars...however Pirelli have made the tyres too sensitive imo, even though they have made tyres for some exciting racing in previous races..it is now getting dangerous!

  ^^^ That is just an off the cuff response and a laymans guide.....I could type another 107 pages on the intricacies of F1 :))))

  i got a good mate that lives in Manchester that is at the track today , i am sure i'll hear all about it from him tonight ... just seems to me it would be more competitive if everyone ran the best tire ...

  Well if everyone ran the best tyre then no one would ever pit...I'm sure ALL tyre manufacturers could build a set of 'boots' to last the whole race distance...but where would the excitement come from then ? hence DRS & KERS....

  Hope your m8t had a great experience...not been to Silverstone, one race on my 'bucket list' :)

  dont get me wrong Andy , i'm not saying one tire for the whole race . NASCAR has goodyear bring 2-3 tires to a track for testing , then they select which one is run during the race .

   

  he goes to all the European races and had to turn down a job at McLearen ...

  Switched Race off t.V after Lewis Hamilton had to call the AA

  Don't know much about NASCAR but even if they test 17 tyres but only one is allowed to be used  ? then..it's still just one tyre available if I understand you correctly ?

  yes , one tire for all ..

  and they tend to pick a compound that last about the same time as a fuel run .
