We might be fans of opposing teams (lol) but I think work comes first in real life.  Who can afford to possibly throw away a million bucks?  --  just dandy

    YankeeJim:

I think that's sooooo cool of Hunter.  It's not every week you get the opportunity to see the birth of your first child, and it's one of those "once in a lifetime experiences" for both he and his wife.  I salute him for having his priorities straight.

Hunter is a great golfer ... he'll win his share of tourneys.  I think he'd be kicking himself the rest of his life had he chosen to finish the tourney and miss the birth of his first born.  I'm sure this is one of those experiences you remember the rest of your life ... with lots and lots of monetary reminders along the way.

Friends and money comes and goes, but family last a lifetime!

    Kat

^^^ The highlighted bit - seriously?

Work is a priority over family/health etc?

Btw I reckon Mr. Mahan is one of the lucky people that probably could afford to 'throw away a million bucks', but I'd be surprised if the loss of earnings even entered his head.

Given his performance this year I have doubts that he would have led all the way,(will admit i don't know what round he WD on). That said, if he thought his wife's due date was during the tourney maybe he should have not entered to begin with.

Maybe he hoped to have completed the event before his wife gave birth?

Mahan withdrew prior to round 3 beginning whilst leading the event at 18 under. Jim's OP has the details.

Think the point being made is some feel his actions were commendable and what most would have done (or like to think they would have done) in the same situation, whilst others seem to have different priorities - i.e. money.

Costs money to have kids lol..........I would think money (being the breadwinner and all) does have its priorities. No ?

Thats the problem here in the states too many babies and too much government (taxpayers) help.

Finish the damn round and earn yours lol. Tounge n cheek of course.

I grew up as a laborer.  Family members went to work in sickness and in health.  Sometimes, I try to imagine what it would be like to be a wealthy person so that I get a picture of their point of view.  Mr. Mahan has a beautiful family and the best doctors and nurses which leaves no lack of love in the delivery room.  --  just dandy

My grandfather was my mom's Lamaze coach.  Experiencing the birth of a child was on his "bucket list".  During his parenting days, he had to spend his hours in a hospital waiting room while his wife gave birth to each of his 9 children.  Like you, DandyCap, he worked 'in sickness and in health', but was in the waiting room for the birth of each of his children.  When given the opportunity to be my mom's coach, he jumped at the chance.

He considered his experience as "life changing".  We're talking 2 days max time off to experience the gift of being there as your child takes his or her first breath ... and if you miss it, you can't click "restart" and go back to the first tee ... it's just an opportunity lost.

I hope every father takes the opportunity to experience their child's birth firsthand.

Kudos to Hunter Mahan for being there to experience the birth of his daugher Zoe Olivia!
