I played my game Matildalgaly. I made a big mistake that i took the screen shot of my approach from the fairway but forgot to save it. Very sorry if that's screwed things up. I'm sure Mati will post a shot showing we were definitely playing Unevens. I promise it won't happen again.

205 yard forced carry on RSG #9...

    WHY.jpg

It's a 3 shot, 1 putt par 4 and it certainly isn't the only one. We're playing low wind instead of the usual high wind on RSG so it all comes around in the end.

BTW, you can always just hit to the front tee box. If you can land on it the game automatically putts the ball back on a tee for your second shot. I was able to shoot -1 on CCC with starters and UL from the tips by hitting to the front tee boxes on a couple of holes then hitting driver from there. The options are out there for anyone to play how they think will help them score better.

You're okay, Dazza! Mati's fairway shot proves you were both playing unevens. One honest mistake is definitely forgivable, and congrats on such a solid score, especially as it sounds as if you got some tough winds out there.

So, just a status update as we reach halfway through the first round timeline:

We have 7 pairings that have played their Oakmont rounds, with Cerino leading the pack with a 71.

I did get word from Eric (LOLserver) that reluctantly, he has to withdraw due to sudden pressure of work, with 4 projects landing on his desk due by Oct 8! James (jlucky3333) will play with a marker instead, and that's in hand. James: your call as to whether Cerino's, bhoese's, or my times work better for you.

That leaves 8 other pairings to play, 2 of whom (Corwyn/deedles77 // bhoese/BigInigoMontoya) have declared their schedule in the thread. Here are the other 6 pairs. Please let us know your progress on setting up your matches. You have until Sunday midnight (WGT time) to get your rounds in:

    Wesdogg75 & gsprink

    Kurtsbuford & Legaci

    chrisironsbones & togemag

    ljbast & seemorehair

    GolfingJMan & Timbo1984

    GEHL13 & unclenewy

    Corwyn:

We have 7 pairings that have played their Oakmont rounds, with Cerino leading the pack with a 71.

SPOILER ALERT: I just finished my round with bhoese.  After a tough double at the Par 4 1st (we both doubled that one, natch) my partner recovered very nicely for a 71 of his own, so we now have a tie at the top of the round 1 leaderboard.  How exciting!!!!  B even hit the pin from 155 yards out on 4, and if he had pulled the stick he just may have Eagled that hole LOL.  GG bhoese, it was a thrill and an honor to witness.

I myself ended up with a 77, grr.  IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN A 74 GOSH DARN IT, but I missed 2 easy putts inside of 5 feet to give me a 3 putt on 2 different holes, and I was given a penalty stroke on 18.  My timer ran out on 17 cause I was unsure about my lie, and on 18 I was taking a screenshot of the green and lost track of time, and I ran out of time there as well.  bhoese said he would talk to Corwyn about removing the penalty, so I'll wait to hear back from them before I officially enter my score.  Still very pleased to break 80 in my first ever unevens with no Mullies but those 2 3 putt bogeys really sting.

Anyways, I took multiple screen shots, but I don't have time to edit and crop them right now.  I'll try to get them online Thursday, and if not then definitely by Friday at the latest. Next up is George so I'll start practicing for that one as well.

    And some replays...

My pinseeker on the 3rd.  It would have been nice to get that double bogey back all at once!

Not to be outdone, BigInigo made up a stroke of his own with this putt on the same hole.  I still haven't seen it, because I was saving the first replay when I heard his putt drain.  Edit:  I guess I never will see that putt, as It's just my shot again with a different file name.

We got the tailwind on 9, setting up this almost perfect approach.  Too bad we got the front pin, as well!

All in all, it was a lot of fun with enough nice shots to balance out the coulda-shouldas for both of us.

Oh!  I will vouch for BigInigo's penalty stroke on 18.  He played at a good pace all evening...seems unnecessary.  I do understand that there's a potential can o' worms there, too.

A tip to players who haven't done a lot of screenshots:   Take a quick one right away, but don't worry about saving it until it's your opponent's turn.

Sounds like you two had a lot of fun out there! Thanks for sharing all this detail, guys!

And thanks for sharing those replays too, Ben. Yup, I've been fooled as well by trying to post my partner's great shot, only to share with the world instead some embarassingly ordinary duff that was own last shot.

I'm curious not only about what happened to you guys on #1, but also mightily impressed that you got down in 2 from that perfect wrong-pin approach spot on #9. A very good par from there.

Edit: As for the penalty shot, thanks for sharing your perspective Ben. That definitely helps. I will confer with my co-organizer but my initial inclination is toward leniency here. As context, there's only a warning for first violation of screenshot posting rules anyway, so it would be cruel indeed to exact the 'slow play' penalty while someone's just getting to grips with their first screenshots.

I would urge everyone to get some practice in with taking screenshots. My method is just to drop them into whatever picture program you have (e.g. mine is Preview for the Mac), then Hide that program right away, and not worry about saving them until later.

    ---------------------------------------

So, with two of the pre-tournament favorites now in the clubhouse with fine 71's apiece, will we see any sub-par rounds from our remaining players ... ?

Here's what happened on the first hole.  We had a fairly strong headwind from tee to green.  Even with Driver then 3wood from the fairway, the green was unreachable in 2. And on this particular hole, we were given back right pin location.  We each had quite a bit of roll on our 3rd shots, so much so that they rolled clear off the back of the green.  Neither one of us could get up and down to save bogey, so it was on in 4 and 2 putts for a 6.  Not the best way to start a round for sure, but at least it wasn't exactly Van de Velde at the Open in 1999, either.  Still, I think we both recovered fairly well from that one.

And I just now noticed that I made a copy/paste or saving error on the Approach/Chipping stats tab, so I don't have that one I'm afraid.  Epic fail.jpg.  I think I have all the others needed though, and I can use the data from bhoese's img when I submit my score.

EDIT: The screens I did manage to capture are now online.  I've also analyzed our card, and I'll offer up as many details as I can remember.

Par 4 2nd: For the second straight hole, we drew the toughest hole location with a back left pin.  This is an extremely difficult Par here, as no matter what distance you are from the cup, there is a VERY severe break near the hole.  Already our chance at the no 3 putt award was in jeopardy only 2 holes into the match.  Despite being 30+ feet away below the hole putting for 3, B and I both 2 putted for a very tough 4.  +2 after the first 2 holes.

Par 4 3rd:  I held the honor from the fairway on our second shot.  We finally drew an easier Pin with a front center hole location.  In my previous experience with this hole, it has been very tough to hold the approach with a long iron to an elevated green.  I had approx. 160ish yards to the pin, and played a full 4 iron with 1/2 backspin IIRC.  I ended up pin high left of the hole 12.5 feet away.  I went on to sink the putt for my only Bird on the front 9.  Before hitting his approach B asked what club I hit, and he must have hit the same, as he nearly holed it from 155 yards out.  Absolutely unbelievable shot.

Par 5 4th:  A tailwind from tee to green meant this fairly gentle Par 4 was easily reachable in 3.  We drew the middle right hole location here, and with the tailwind I was too afraid of missing long, so I played the conservative shot.  Lay up short for a 2 putt par.  But B attacked the pin from ~66 yards out in the first cut rough IIRC, and got his second straight Bird to get back to even Par.

Par 3 6th: We drew the back left Pin here, and I actually think that is the easier of the 2.  The natural contour of the green will feed the ball right down to the hole, as long as you carry the ridge 1/3 or so of the way up the green.  I hit an absolutely beautiful 6 iron that came to rest inside of 5 feet.  Even with such a short putt the break threw me off, and I was unable to follow B's bird.  A 2 putt par for Inigo -- that one really hurt.

Par 4 7th:  We both missed fairly poorly on our approach.  Me to short right, and B to short left.  Neither one of us could get up and down, resulting in the first 2 putt bogeys of the match.

Par 4 9th:  Once again we drew the tougher of the hole locations with the front right pin.  This pin with starter clubs is the absolute toughest hole on the course, in my opinion.  B made an amazing par after reaching the middle of the green with a 3 wood. I went for the conservative shot and layed up with the hybrid wood.  I was hoping to pitch below the hole and 2 putt for a bogey 5.  Either the lie, the wind, a missed ding, or a combination of the 3 pushed my approach right, leaving me in the rough just outside of the bunker.  I was too afraid if I attacked the pin directly my pitch would wind up on the Beach and I'd really be in trouble.  I played it conservative and went around the bunker, leaving me with a really tough putt for par.  I hit a good stroke and left it around 4 feet for the bogey 5, but once again the break got me and I lipped out for a 6.

Par 5 12th:  A strong headwind from tee to green.  Instead of hitting Driver - 3 wood - 7 or 8 iron on a long par 4, we were both hitting 3iron or hybrid wood.  Yeah, thanks WGT.  B had the honors from the fairway, and found the bunker on the left. Naturally, I followed suit by finding the bunker to the right.  Misery loves company, I guess.  B made a great 12 or 13 footer IIRC to get up and down from the sand, but I failed to do so to earn the bogey 6.

Par 3 13th: B was torn between 6i and 7i off the tee.  He went with the 6 but missed short.  I believe his quote was something along the lines of "Well I could have done that with the 7 iron!!!!!!!!!"  I also hit 6i, and found the right side of the green, and the slope fed the ball back down towards the hole a bit.  I had an 8foot down hill putt with a 4inch drop.  Gave it a gentle roll, and just did find the edge of the cup for my 2nd Bird overall, first on the back.  Meanwhile B hit a beautiful flop from the rough to 1.4 or 1.5 feet to save Par.  His 2nd best shot of the round, I felt like.

Par 3 16th:  A long par 3.  A strong headwind.  Handicapped clubs with minimal loft.  A recipe for disaster????  Hardly.  I hit a 97 or 98% driver with a touch of backspin, and came to rest 3.5 feet from the pin.  I believe B hit the same, but missed a little long. I was able to convert for Bird #3 while B 2 putt for Par.

Par 4 17th:  This hole I really wish I could get back.  Perfect drive to find the right edge of the fairway.  I hit a choked down lob wedge on approach, but the tailwind pushed it long and off the green.  I had a yellow lie, uphill I think, with a sharp slope from left to right.  I had a brainfart, and mistakenly thought my lie would send the ball right, but nope, it was left. So when I aimed left of the pin, the shot very nearly went completely sideways, leaving me on the fringe 16 feet from the pin.  xD.  I 2 putt from there for bogey lol, and B 2 putt for his par.

Par 4 18th:  We were both on in 2, although I was a good 40+ feet away with a tough path to the hole.  B had a tap in for Par though, so he must have had a makable birdie putt.  We both 2 putt for a par, but the penalty stroke pushed me to a bogey.
