Here's a recap of Thursday's round between bhoese (B) and Inigo.

Par 4 1st: I hit an absolute worm burner of a drive, and got quite a few yards on the roll after landing.  B is not so lucky, and his approach missed short.  I two putt for a par, while B has his par save lip out -- his first of many :( lip outs on the round -- for a bogey 5.

Par 4 2nd: We both reach the green in 2.  I miss for Bird from 14 feet, while B just barely missed his Bird from 8.1 feet.  Both 2 putt for Par.

Par 3 3rd: Can't remember which wind we had, but green was still reachable off the tee.  I'm on the green, but I failed to clear the ridge so I'm a good 20 feet below the hole.  B is 18 feet Pin high to the right.  I 2 putt for par, while once again B just barely missed his Bird to follow with a par of his own.

Par 4 4th: This hole is an absolute monster with starters, but luckily we drew a left to right (IIRC) tailwind.  However despite the nice wind, she's still unreachable in 2 for both of us.  My approach takes a bad roll to the first cut rough to the right, while B maintains the fairway.  My 3rd missed 16 feet long but still on the green, and I get my first of many miraculous Par saves.  Meanwhile B lands his approach inside of 4 feet, and taps in for his par as well.

Par 4 5th: Once again we both reach in 2.  Pin high from 6.7 feet for B, with me 22 feet below the hole.  I two putt for Par, and B dials in another patented lip out on his Bird try, resulting in yet another tap in par.

Par 3 6th: We both find the green off the tee.  Me 12 foot behind, and B 9.8 feet below.  I miss long and left, and B pushed it wide right.  We both 2 putt for a disappointing par.

Par 5 7th: I did my level best to shoot myself in the foot on this hole, but somehow walk away unscathed.  I miss the ding left off the tee, and wind up in the primary rough. I try to punch out with the hybrid, but miss ding badly left to find the 30/40 weeds.  I punch out from there into the fairway.  I hit a poor 4th shot, leaving me with a 12 footer (below the hole IIRC) to save par.  It was a straight putt with minimal break, and I drain it, giving me my 2nd miracle Par on the front 9.  Meanwhile, after missing a bunker by mere inches on his 2nd shot, B lands his approach pin high 3 feet away for a tap in Bird.  He finally got one back, hehe.

Par 4 8th:  I find trouble yet again, but manage to walk away with the most miraculous of my front 9 par saves.  After finding the fairway off the tee, I hit a terrible hybrid wood into the front right greenside bunker. Thankfully my lie was green, so I pull out the Sandy and give it a ride, and I STILL can't hardly believe what happened next: OMGWTFBBQPWNED. Basically the greatest bunker shot I've ever hit, and I tap in for an up and down Par.  Meanwhile, B 2 putts from 20 feet past the hole for his par.

Par 4 9th: The second of George's front 9 Beast Par 4's.  Luckily we draw a left to right tailwind off the tee, and both find the fairway.  I'm on in two pin high from 22 feet, while B landed hard and rolled off the back of the green. Pitched to 16 feet, and drained it Like a Boss to save par. I two putt for a par of my own, and we're both sitting even after the first 9.

Par 4 10th: The comedy of errors continues.  I overclub, land hard, and roll off the back of the green.  B missed left, got a horrible bounce, and took a bee line right into a greenside pot bunker.  He managed to escape, but couldn't find the green unfortunately.  A brilliant chip to 2.1 feet leaves B with a tap in bogey.  Meanwhile I pitch to 4.5 feet, and save Par.

Par 3 11th: IIRC we draw a headwind, and both hit Driver off the tee.  I'm pin high from 17 feet after a lucky bounce and roll, while B is 9.8 feet below the hole.  I two putt for par, while B drains it Like a Boss for a Birdie 2.

Par 4 12th: The most gentle of the back 9 Par 4's, at least yardage wise lol.  I land hard and roll 48 feet past the pin, but still hold the green.  B is 21 feet below the hole.  I 2 putt for par, and once again B pushed the Bird just inches wide right for another tap in par.

Par 4 13th:  An absolute Beast of a green on the 13th in my opinion. You absolutely CAN NOT miss to the right, and yet both B and I manage to do just that.  I could have sworn we were both on the green, but for whatever reason B's scorecard is indicating otherwise.  I don't know what that is about.  Anyways, we both have tough 40+ feet putts that must travel up and over a steep ridge, and there was quite a bit of break involved as well.  B wanted to take his time to very carefully analyze and line up the putt -- understandably so -- and winds up getting a shot clock violation.  In the end, we both manage to save a very tough par.

Par 5 14th: B's unlucky streak continues.  His approach lands hard and rolls off the back of the green to the fringe.  Naturally WGT is asleep at the wheel, and they default him to the 150 foot putter scale.  B doesn't notice until the very last second, by which time it was too late.  He draws a 2nd shot clock violation for a 1 stroke penalty.  His putt from the fringe came up a foot short IIRC, and he tapped in for a should have been par 5 but ended up being a bogey 6.  I didn't think it was fair, but B was surprisingly calm about it.  Meanwhile, I hit a choked down pitching wedge to 4 feet from 87 yards out, and make the putt for my first - and only, LOL - Bird of the round.

Par 4 15th: We lose the lottery this time, and draw a headwind off the tee.  Green is unreachable in 2.  Our 3rd shots are nearly identical, as we are 14 feet past the hole. B missed par by inches yet again, while I manage to drain mine. Replay.  It was right around this time that B remarks I'm scrambling more often than a cook at Denny's, ROFL.

Par 3 16th: The last of the Par 3's, and thankfully it is reachable with an iron LoL. The greens natural contour will feed the ball down to the hole, so with the right wind this is a definite legit Birdie opportunity.  B and I hit nearly identical tee shots, me 12 feet past and him at 11. I miss Bird by just an eyelash, while B drains his for his 2nd Birdie 2 on the back.

Par 4 17th: Once again karma bites us, as we draw the head wind off the tee. Unreachable in 2.  B hits a nice chip inside 5 feet to save par. During my practice rounds on this hole, I hit several mulligans from nearly the exact same spot as where I was, but the lies must have been totally different.  I hit a poor flop shot to 14 feet below the hole, and this time it is my turn to miss the par putt by mere inches.  I tap in for my first bogey of the day.

Par 4 18th: Once again, a strong headwind off the tee.  2nd straight Par 4 unreachable in 2.  Not only that, but a very nasty green to boot, and you absolutely CAN NOT miss left.  B miss dinged his approach, and as we saw earlier he found the greenside bunker right on the lip -- not a favorable lie for sure.  He managed to escape the bunker, but was still unable to find the green.  His fourth failed to clear the steep ridge -- like I said, you absolutely can not miss left -- and it basically rolled right back down to his feet.  Managed to get up and down from there however, for a disappointing double bogey 6.  Meanwhile, I hit another poor pitch that comes up short, leaving me with an 11 footer for par.  I two putt for back to back bogeys to finish at 1 over 71.  Still a fabulous round, the last 2 holes notwithstanding of course.

    Inigo,

Thank you for sharing such fabulous detail about your and Ben's round. I really feel like I was there thanks to your play-by-play. That bunker escape on #8 was amazing!

Shame about the last couple of holes: they sure are a tough finish. But congratulations on a great score!

    Hi OeJ,

That's a great score you've posted, and yes, I have to agree, it's hard to imagine that anyone can top your 11 shot improvement. Looks like you've got that prize sewn up!

And you're the clear front-runner too for the CTTH on #12, with 6.6ft. What a beautiful approach! I was kind of hoping we'd see a great shot from one of the crazy hanging lies there. I think that hole is a superb test of strategy. I've had tailwinds in practice where I risked going left of the first bunker on the left in hopes of a flatter lie: it's just manageable but with no margin for error at all. Or you can lay up short of the first ridge, and hope for something flattish, or try and bounce your way over the bumps. It's just great to have so many options to ponder on the tee shot.

Congratulations on such a fine recovery from the awful start. Kudos to you for finding the focus and clawing it back.

18 is a fascinating test as well with this setup. I like the risk/reward: you can try for the narrower upper-level fairway area on the left (if you have a helping wind), but you risk the bunker there. If you make it, the angle of approach is much kinder, allowing you to play right of the pin, and not be so reliant on perfect distance. Coming in from the right though, there's almost no room between the greenside bunker and the pin, and woe betide you if you're long. A great hole!

One thing I was hoping you might share is some of your experiences on the course in real life. For those who don't know, John is a damn fine golfer IRL, and got to play RSG many times in true links conditions. Anyway, it's fitting that you shot such a fine round on a course you know for real.

    Cheers, Corwyn

    unclenewy:
at the moment I have no chance of "Option A" and could possibly make some time on Sunday depending on whether I get called back to work Saturday night, which is very possible.

Ironically I have most of tomorrow free as the job I was on has been postponed (which is why it's very likely I could get called back Sat night)

I'm thinking that if either of us gets a chance to play with a marker, and even split it into two 9's, we should take it.

    Hi Neil,

Just wanted to say that seeking a marker while you have time today sounds like a great plan. I'm around for next 3 hours or so, Cerino is also going green whenever he can today, and David (hyena64) has offered to mark as well.

And JMan, let's see if anyone can match up with your preferred (and good internet connection) time of Saturday morning around 2-4AM PST.
David: could that time work for you? The only other player in the field that it seems to be a good time for is JayO92 in Australia, so JMan, please feel free to get in touch with him to see if he might be able to mark also.

Good luck out there to all the remaining players!

Personal experiences at RSG,.....well on courses like that all the best ones are when the weather is bad with wind and rain, then the course comes alive, you end up in places you've never seen before and have to manufacture shots from everywhere.

I was playing it in the days of Norman Faldo and Ballesteros, but the biggest eye-opener I ever saw was Sandy Lyle hittig the 14th in 2 shots, his second shot with a 2 iron.

    That was special.

I also watched Nicklaus shoot an 83 in day one of the Open, and then followed up with a 66 to make the cut by just one shot. That performance tells u everything about RSG.

Wow Micke! I'm stunned you've scored so well with no practice at all. Very impressive! But yes, I'd strongly recommend some for Olympic: it's a unique puzzle to try and unravel (assuming you plan on getting onto some greens, lol!) A high GIR score here is almost impossible.
