Since a couple of my members seem to think it works I will share both of my handicap ideas.

We have 4 "player of the Month" rounds that count towards these handicaps

First is the original one that we have used for the last year or so.

Example.....Player A shoots 65-67-61-69-59 in 5 handicap tournaments.....Add these...321....divide by # of rounds.....5.......64.20.......subtract 1 in your head (nobody gets their true handicap in real life)........63.20........An average of 60 is a zero handicap so this person would be a -3 handicap......My decimal point decider is .50......63.49 would be a -3 and 63.50 would be a -4     Now, Player B shoots 59-56-54-53-60 for 282 divided by 5=56.40. Subtract 1(yes even for him) give you 55.40...Round down in this case to a 55 and this player is a +5 handicap

I show this on the "club handicap" page like this.......

               Player             Stroke/rounds                average             handicap

    1. Player A               321/5                             64.20                     -3
    2. Player B               282/5                             56.40                    +5

This has worked fairly well but after 50 or 60 rounds the changes are reeeeeal slow so starting this month we are gonna try a new set up that I call (for better or worse) a rolling handicap system where ONLY your newest 9 rounds count towards your handicap.  All the other factors will remain the same.....

Example...Player A shoots 72-65-63-66-62-66-65-63-64=586=65.11=-4 handicap.  Next round Player A shoots a 61...his 72 then drops off and it goes..575=63.89=-3 handicap

This will make handicaps a bit more volatile and fun I think maybe.

Two quick things ..... 1st....when your caculater says 65.58888 it should be rounded to 65.59..if it says 65.584999 it should be rounded to 65.58.

And 2nd...This can work for credit tournaments if you title them something like "-3 handicap or greater only"AND your people pay attention

    For what it's worth...............

Thanks for that info Mike, it seems clear enough, but I'm wondering how did you get the 60 for zero handicap?

I had something like this in mind, and it's just off the top of my head using random figures. Similar to real golf, but I'm not an expert there either.

For example, a player plays 5 rounds on par 70 courses,

    Course   70-70-70-70-70   = 350

    Scores   67-70-71-66-64   = 338

                          Total par score  -12 divide by -2.4 to -2 add -1 = -3 h/cap +3

In 5 rounds of different par courses:

    Course 70-71-72-70-72    = 355

    Scores 70-68-69-67-71    = 345

                      Total par score      -10   divide by 5 = -2 add -1 = -3 = h/cap +3

Handicaps could be reviewed/changed based on a players best scores in a set number of most recent credit or handicap tournaments.

Does the above seem workable or am I missing something?

Michael, it looks workable but I will send you my formula for consideration (as soon as I get some time to sanitize the spread sheet)

I think my formula might be of interest to you.

I used 60 for zero handicap cause that's the cutoff for advancement to Tour Legend and because it just works.  I'm afraid I don't think your system is workable.  With my system your player that shot the 345 over 5 rounds would have averaged 69.00 right?  345 divided by 5 =69  Then, because in real life you don't get your "exact" handicap, I subtract 1 from that average giving him a 68.00 average.  using the 60 as zero method this player would then have a -8 handicap.  Big difference from what you get and I think a lot closer to this players true ability.

I believe this to be a good system due to both accuracy AND because it is very EASY once you get the hang of it

We do our HCPS in tiers. And to determine a players HCP I take a players last 200 rounds. This is a better snap shot of ones current playing abilities then the WGT avg.

Our tiers are as follows for a 4 round tourney like our CC Majors, but with all this said, somethings are left to discretion.

    Under 60 = Tier 1 = 0 Strokes

    60-62 = Tier 2 = 2 strokes(2 rounds), 1 Stroke(2 rounds)

    63-65=Tier 3 = 4 Strokes(2 rounds), 3 strokes(2 Rounds)

    Above 66 = Tier 4 = 6 Strokes(2 rounds), 5 strokes(2 Rounds)

This seems to keep everyone contending and interested.

I think either system would work, but shouldn't the course par be the 'zero'?

Handicaps can't and won't be actually deducted from final scores in credit tournaments. I  just need a formula to grade players for graded club credit tournaments.

Last words on subject (I Hope).....Handicaps here need to be based on "best player" as the "pro" so he would be a zero handicap. (real pros have zero handicap) The level for this is "TOUR LEGEND" and that kicks in at 60 so 60 should be zero handicap......It does work AND it is KISS. Keep it simple stupid.  Run simulations and see for yourself.....

Oh yeah, don't forget, since we have "better than pros" on WGT there are positive handicaps in my system.  Your basic frickin 56 average shooting Tour Legend would be a +5 handicap

Cobaltm, your last post explains it better (apart from the snide remarks).

    Thanks.

That was uncalled for, and where is the snide remark. Mike is not a very low handicapper when it comes to snide.

he says it how he sees it.

    KISS KISS

    OeJ ... refreshingly imperfect
