Yes. Within 5 yards on flat surfaces and less than a yard fron the green.

Quite obviously you don't know how to fully avail yourself of the benefits of chipping from many places NOT sitting on the edge of a green. Oh well, different strokes.  :-)

My stats say otherwise Jim. Perhaps you rely too much on the chip shot on the course and the cheap shot on the forum. :-)

there's northing wrong with the chipping in this game. why meddle with a masterpiece?

it's not what's the best shot to play.....it's what works best for the player.

depending on the elevation to the green i might prefer to flop the ball to get it as high in the air as poss with full bs to avoid any roll out.

just depends on which shots folks feel most comfortable with.

    My stats say otherwise

Stats are meaningless in this game, at best they are only a guideline.

Many players like myself used the starters clubs for a year so all my stats are skewed if you compared them to current stats with good clubs.

A lot of players like  Jim  probably played a fair chunk of their WGT careers with much inferior clubs to what is currently available.Newer players have much better clubs available and much earlier.

Other factors that will greatly affect "stats" include putting - if you cannot putt it is highly likely you will fail to improve your stats, and many players simply quit a bad round - this single handed makes a huge difference.

IMO all shots have a place, it is knowing when to use a particular shot that counts. Whilst a chip shot may work well on a shot over 5 yards, the fact the ball rolls further means the ball will break more if not a straight shot, opposed to a pitch that  travels  further in the air but this negates any break.

My original post was to give the OP specific advice which he could take or ignore, which Tramilleo agreed with. Jim just said that it was all about knowing how to use the shot and that it was very valuable when used correctly. What did that tell him?

^^^^ she is correct, not every shot is for every person, i just started using the flop last year after avoiding it for 3 years, it took time to learn and i gladly took that time as it is a very valuable shot to have in your  bag. But the chip shot lol not for me unless with the parameters that Courtney described. But again TO EACH HIS/HER OWN.

Hogwash. You distinctly advised to avoid using the shot. That is wretched advice and just your uninformed opinion because you haven't taken the time to learn it.  You don't know it so you advise everybody else against using it. Pathetic advice.

I find the chip is best avoided. I only use it if I'm less than 5 yards from the pin and then only on flat surfaces within a yard of the green.

The first 2 words? What in the world does that mean? Your advice was to avoid it. Can't spin it any other way.

It really comes down to wedge and ball combo.  With the Atv wedge I'd hardly ever use the chip shot.

But with the Cleveland 7yd chip shot,  it's definitely a viable shot.

Great example would be CCC #11 back pin and you roll through the green just behind the pin.

Of course, what works for me may not work for others.

Thanks for all the advice,  but mostly my problem is from short distance on the fringe, when adjusting for green speed and elevation, it just seems all wrong, doesn't go anywhere or rolls way past hole so I usually will just putt . if its flawed just would like them to correct or tweek it. if its not, I haven't figured it out and will stay away from it until I can.  anyway thanks all for the help !!
