This one was all GolferDadRB. My approaches were badly off on every hole except 17 (way short on 3 of 4 holes) and I did not make a single putt.

Well done Mags & Jon! Sounds like Ross and mm fought you hard all the way. Thanks mm for the detailed description (it was fun to read that before seeing the scorecard, and feel the tension of not knowing the result).

Team ROW sure needed that point, though. The fightback is ON!

Overall match score now: Team USA: 5  -  Team ROW: 3

That was a little too quick.  I wish we were playing 18s for the alt shot.  It only takes a meter skip here and a close miss there and that's it.  USA wins 4 and 3.

Dazz got metered into 60-70 brush on the 10th.  The last three holes were all on the wrong side of the razor's edge for ROW...a lipout on a delicate downhill putt on 13, then approaches that barely rolled off on 14 and 15.

Congratulations Ben and JJ, and commiserations to Darren and Javier. You came up against an extremely strong US team, and as Ben says, the margins are very small at this level.

Ben, I too wish we'd been playing 18s. 9 holes doesn't quite feel like a proper game. And, especially given all the trials of getting 4 people together, we might as well play for longer than 45 mins!

I'm very tempted to do 18 holes for the Alt Shot in the next edition of this, but perhaps reduce the shot timer to 60 seconds.

And, I'd even like us to consider doing 18 holes for the Fourballs as well, perhaps with 45 second shot timer. Since we'd be playing it in practice mode, if anyone got their two shot time penalty it would only impact one player's score from a 2-person team on whichever hole the penalty was exacted. In addition, perhaps we could do it as two 9s, where players take a 5 minute break in the middle, to allow computer reboots etc (& bathroom breaks!) so that disconnects are less likely. That would also give each player a fresh start if they had experienced a time penalty.

To me, 18 holes also makes for a true experience of the course, and a fairer way to see who are the better players.

Any thoughts from participants this year? Do you think we could manage 18 holes in all series next time?

9 holes of 4 ball took us almost a hour and a half. 3 Hours for one match seems like a long time

^ Same for our group. 3 hours for 18 holes would have had me gone mad.

I suppose Alt Shot should take half the time. I hope.  ;)

Corwyn, I remember you asking if players wanted to be part of the Ryder cup teams at the beginning of the qualifiers. I you set up 18 holes games, everyone is free to give his desire or not to play it at this time.

I kind of agree with your last post, playing 18 holes in each format would make it more interesting especially in UEL games where levels are considerably tighter than on flat lies.

On 9 holes, if you lose 2 on 3 first holes, game is about to be over or the best you can hope is a halve with those guys ;) On 18 holes, it remains a lot of golf to play.

This is to me a major event in wgtland and it should deserve that any players have to give it the time it suggests. I'm definitely for the 18 holes games in every format of the event and if I feel I can't play (if by chance I qualify again) because I don't have the time for it, then I'll let you know that I can't be part of the team and let somebody else enjoy this event. It's up to everyone to make it work if everyone want to play it.

So, do neither of you feel that it would end up significantly shorter with a 45 second clock instead of 90 seconds... ?

Note too that if we did Fourballs over 18 holes, we'd do it in split 9s, perhaps just with 5-10 minutes between, or if it needed to be, successive days could be allowed.

As Fred says, this is a significant event in WGT-land. And given the effort it takes to find overlapping times, and the commitment players show in qualifying in the first place, I'd like to move it closer to the real-life event format.

Also, I suspect that there would be more interest and commitment if it didn't stretch out over practically a whole month. I wish there was a way to do it in a more compressed time-frame as well...

I'm afraid Konrad and myself have a loss to report.  Neither of us had our A game with us but Rock and Iconian were very, very solid.

A bogey from us on the 1st hole gave them a nice easy start, not something players of this standard really need.  We got one back on #15 and had a chance on #16 but failed to convert it.

Very well played guys, a good win.
