Very good analysis - a driving range will not be free of costs!

1st thought: Is CC passes available for non CC members?

But, an entry fee of 37 cr is thinkable.

Compared to balls' lives, 37 cr ain't much, and it's variable in relation to the balls used.. It's one ball of a 111 cr sleeve, less than half a ball (=60 hits) of the 250 cr Callies, 20-25 hits on a 650 cr sleeve.

From a business point of view, ball life should count extra.

The latter calc makes it evident that 37 cr = 25 shots might bring you over a 9 hole round of practice even with the most expensive balls. Intensive practice, with Mulligans, also makes good use of this amount. So the driving range might rightly be called a waste for the players, more so for the company.

If a range is ever introduced I have no illusions that we will pay for it. From a business perspective I do understand the need to offset development costs by income.

But taking a step back, as the range would really only be useful for mapping clubs/balls the overall usage I think is limited. Newer players may use it for a short term to learn - but can you see many of then actually paying to do so?

Alosso sensibly points out, costs will vary depending on the type of ball, and lets face it, there is no point using a different ball than you usually use as you will get significant variances depending on the attributes. Therefore I really do not believe there will be a great return on the investment as most players will not actually pay to use a range.

As pointed out earlier, Icon was quoted as saying a range would make the game too easy by systematic practice.

We can practice and practice and by having mulligans retake shots and try various shot types. But there are always variables such as elevation changes, angles, holes that play long/short and wind - all of which vary results and always add some doubt to the end result (was it user error, did I miscalculate etc.). By removing these it becomes exact math and therefore can become too easy. It also removes the unknowns - the level of VEM. I was in PM's with a very respected player and he suggested this, something I have believed for quite some time as being a reason for no range.

For the VEM haters - it does have it's place, but I very much doubt WGT will want to show exactly how much variation exists by introducing a range.

The Range and putting green options have always been something, since I have been here, that has varied opinions.  I personally don't see the need for it now with the Mulligan feature.  I mean in real life I won't even step foot onto a range unless I am desperate to work on something.  I find that on course practice is something that is more beneficial.  Just go to any range near you and you will see people there with the purest swing you will ever see, but the moment they get out on the course they fall apart and can't break 100.   I just think players benefit more from actually being on the course and trying different shots.  Hit a full shot then mulligan it and try a punch shot.  See the outcome and learn from it.

This sums up my thoughts. A range is where I will try grip adjustments, stance variations and general swing arc,  but the moment you are on the real course gradients require alterations. All of these things are automated on WGT (except UE which require aim - and unrealistic- changes.

You learn from playing in real conditions.

Personally I suck at putting.  My all round game (on WGT) is average at best but my putting is really poor - many a 6ft miss and a host of other problems including reading green, correct judgement of pace, etc etc.  It takes too much time to play through an entire practice round only to refine my putting.  I know I can hit the fairway almost everytime, its the nuances of putting that I need to practice and currently the only way to do it is play full rounds - I simply don't have the time or inclination to do that to take endless mulligans.  There should be putting greens and driving ranges - not only would they be useful to players who are rubbish like me but to newcomers getting a handle on the game.

This is a fair point - the balls are massively overpriced and simply don't last long enough, it's disgraceful really.
