In my experience a good option from 10 yards or more away you can get close by flopping from the fringe.

Putting is dodgy, chipping can be unpredictable.

So, there I am at the dreaded 9th at Kiawah. You all know the second shot. The one that plays long for no valid reason. Hit a proper length club and it comes short of the ground. Club up a touch and your 2/30ft past the hole.

So, I end up left, thought I was on the green, but no the fringe. 10 yds. Get the 50 wedge flop, play a little over two thirds say 11 yards figuring I may end up witha 2/3 ft putt back at worst. It flops a few inches.

Now, the usual know it alls will blah blah blah about chipping etc.. But I play very good flops on most fringes and even out of light rough, a few shallow bukers can be flopped.

So, when you have an average RG score of -2 - maybe enough for 60 credits - does WGT do one and make up the rules as it goes along. If you can flop out of fringe 95% of the time, why not the other 5%.

    That's my tired rant.

there are bugs involved with playing short shots from the fringe...THAT IS A FACT...the top players in this game have acknowledged that those bugs exist..

wgt seems reluctant to admit it, and/or fix those bugs... (maybe the programmers just can't cut it)..

maybe, just maybe, if enough of us bug them about it, they will hire some pencil-necks who have the ability to resolve the issue...

I await the reply from wgt...

I allow for a fade and play a couple of lines right of the bell on the approach on kiawah nine. Then if you go too far right of the bell distance is subtracted from the shot enough not to go down the right side of the green that runs fast. A bell shot will go long but it's not as bad of a putt than it is from right and back.

Same thing on 12 but a bell ringer in that case will stop better coz the left side holds better. How many times do you see a woefully short shot on a mishit left there?

I only flop between 12 and 16 yards as a rule, I find a chip, pitch or full shot better outside that range, but that's just me.

I can't explain the muff because I flop from the fringe too and have never seen that happen.  I've never hit one of those flops less than 50% either, is it possible you did in your estimating?

On the hole playing long, it's no mystery. The fairway right in front of the green slopes up radically. Shots get stopped by it so they come up short because there's no roll. If you can't stick the shot what you can do is punch a shot that will roll up that slope. The trick is to know the strength of the punch. Tibbets discovered that when he was around.

From what I can tell you are about 11 yards short of flag below the hole. You hit flop about 2/3rds meter and it shanked and didn't go all the way. I suspect 2 things may have happened. 1. you choked too much on the flop. 2. you missed ding and paired off with 1. it forced the error.

Personally, I have used flop there many times and only time it backfired was when I missed meter badly. Also, from inside 11 yards u can use chip or pitch no? The 13 pitch on 50 wedge, can be choked to about 9 and it will get there.

I recommend you try and experiment shots and not just stick to one, for sometimes that experimentation will lead to better ways to manage the course

bugs did exist when it came to putting, but you can putt from the fringe quite easy now. As for any other shot from the fringe, there was never a problem with those.

One of the best shots out there to get out of trouble, You can get up to 17 yards with no backspin, but can go anywhere down to 8 accurately and stop where you want it to.

There is still a bug with short downhill putts from the fringe...BnB, and some other top players have acknowleged it..

    Here are a few examples..

Kiawah #13...Pull you approach shot slightly and you end in the fringe,  15 feet from the hole and 10 inches downhill.... Hit a putt with about 5 feet of power and the ball only moves an inch..

Oakmont #15...Hit your approach just long (on line with pin) and the scenario and results are quite similar...

Bottom line...If you are in fringe, and the shot calls for less than 10 feet of power, the ball barely moves if you attempt to putt it..

Just did a 6 foot putt from the fringe on BPB, no problems. As I said I knew it existed but after about a month ago it was gone. I cannot speak for oakmont but BPB it just worked.
