What to do in London in 7 hours?

My Wife and I will be in London for a long layover on our way to Cape Town South Africa. Our airport is Heathrow. We are considering the London Eye, Westminster Abbey, Buckingham Palace, Big Ben. I noticed there are many players here from the UK, so I think this is the perfect place to ask. Any suggestions, additions, subtractions or anything that comes into mind is on the table! Well anything that my wife will do. Which completely takes your mind out of the gutter.

If you like doing touristy things and looking at 'culture', yea that sounds fine... london eye is overrated and over priced, about £40 per head.

If you like a bit of walk-n-talk-sight-see, take a walk around the london bridge, I find it relaxing any how. Can also do a ferry ride.

If wife likes shopping, Harrods or oxford street (encapsulates london's high street culture) place to go.

Madame Tusad's wax museum's pretty cool to look at once.

If want to see all the places you mentioned and more take the 'original london bus tour'. Ticket office at baker street right next to Tusade's wax museum.

More specific questions are welcomed. :)

Thanks those are all great suggestions. Gonna avoid oxford street. This trip costs enough already! The walk-n-talk is a great idea. We've done a few in Charleston and never been disappointed.

Also if your gonna be landing at heathrow windsor is not to far only 20 mins from heathrow you can walk round windsor castle and don't use black cabs at heathrow to london it will cost a bit use the heathrow express

I might be wrong, but if you have a US passport and no UK entry visa...they won't let you out the airport...thats pretty much a standard procedure for most airports in most countries.

Thats interesting...had a layover at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam on my way to Dublin and didnt have a problem exiting the airport to sightsee,i was under the impression that all passports are basic entry visas with a specific request on the 1st page by the US Secretary of State, to permit entry without delay or hindrance to US citizens and we reciprocate...all we were asked at the exit what was our intent,we said simply to sightsee during the layover...not a problem... and they stamped the passport, but, its always wise to check before you travel to any foreign country, procedures change all the time...

US citizens do not require visas to enter the UK, other EU countries, and some other countries. To leave the airport at Heathrow you will need to go through customs and immigration, and then go back through again on your way out, so you have to allow time for that. Heathrow is a bit far out, but it is doable to go into town for a longish layover.

If I were you I would take the tube to the centre of the centre, Charing Cross, and pop in to the National Gallery (entry fee, thanks to socialism, GBP 0.00), right on Trafalgar Square, throw in a lunch at one of the nearby pubs, and then pop out to Heathrow again on the Tube. That way you get the flavor of the place but avoid the stress of trying to do too much in a short time.

(Amsterdam, as mentioned, is fabulous to visit for a layover, as long as you don't get too ... *confused* ... to find your way back to the airport.)
