Not as easy as you think, as we learned in the first, things are not always what they seem to be

    Try again

    gonfission:

    30 cows, 28 chicken in a field

    How many didn't?

Obviously, didn't what? I say run away in which case 58 didn't   :-)

You start with a total payment of $30 from the three men.  They're refunded $5 so that their total cost is now $25.  The clerk refunds $3 and keeps $2.

    25 + 3 + 2 = 30

The math tells the tale, the semantics of the set-up mislead.

No need to try again...I gave a perfectly logical answer with (hopefully) a touch of humor.  I rest my case.*

(in lieu of a case I'll settle for a six-pack)

No, they're not.  They only got $3 back. As far as they are concerned they paid $27 based on what was returned to them. There's 27 hard dollars in their hands and 3 dollars to account for. Keep 'splaining.  ;-)

p.s., You feel like you're talking to Doc?  :-D

No need to keep 'splaining...the math 'splains.

gonfission, your latest riddle works if spoken, not so much when it's text only...and that's all I have to say, er type about that.

Aaargh, you disappoint me, Mark.  I'd string this out but I gotta go. It's all in the perception. The actual cost of the room plus the $2 that the clerk snagged is $27.  :-)

The original premise is that they each paid $10 for the room, for a total of $30.  But , if the room cost $25.00, then   $25.00 / 3 is $8.331/3, not $8.00.  So $8.331/3  +  $1.00 refunded is $9.331/3 each.  $9.331/3 * 3 = $28.00.  $28.00 + $2.00 the clerk kept =$30.00.  The original amount paid.  No missing money.

The expected response but it fails because there were no coins involved.  ;-)
