I've been playing WGT since Kiawah was the only course on the game. The fact that it's almost ten years later and I'm still playing testifies to the fact that I like the game.
That being said, over the years I've been frustrated by a few aspects of the game. In particular, as the game has evolved and my level went higher, the game became more arcade-y to the point that it really lacks the problem solving and risk reward of real golf. Look, golf is a hard game, but WGT has gotten to the point where only putting actually captures the difficulty of the real-life counterpart. This has become especially true with the introduction of the sponsored apparel bonuses.
So a lot of my suggestions are about making the game harder...I know this won't be popular with many, if not most, players. But for the people who are serious at the game, this matters.
So here are my suggestions - I'll sort these by the part of the game.
* Make driving and fairway woods much harder. It is way too easy to hit fairways off the tee and greens from fairway woods. My fairways hit is like 95% - that's not real golf. Increase the meter speed of these clubs, especially if players choose to hit 100% club speed. Aim to have even the best players hitting fairways 75-80% of the time at 100% power.
* Make "thick rough" lies more random. In real life, if you hit it into the thick rough, maybe you'll have a good lie...but maybe you won't. In WGT, if you hit it into a 40-50% rough area, you're out of luck. I'd make rough lies more random.
* Make iron play more difficult on advanced levels only by turning on slope effects for higher-level players and matches. I think that one feature will make iron play interesting again for advanced players.
* Make flop shots more difficult. Most golfers in real life don't use flop shots almost 100% of the time, but in WGT, everyone does. That's because in real life, there is the real risk of chunking the shot, but there is no risk of that in WGT. Make the meter speed a lot higher of flop shots and reduce the distance for chunked flop shots. The benefit of this is it will bring pitch shots and chip shots back as an option for WGT players to consider.
* Add a head-to-head match play option. In real life, no one plays head to head stroke play because if someone messes up one hole, the match is over. Let's make head to head match play instead or at least offer an option.
* Show the green speed as the game starts up. Nothing is more frustrating than having to pitch from the first hole because you have no idea what the green speed is. Even on wedge shots, green speed can make a difference on where you aim. In real life, everyone putts from the putting green to get a sense of the greens. Show the green speed - don't make people guess.
* Eliminate the meter range guide for putting in advanced level head-to-head games. Look, if you're a good player, you should know what speed to hit your putts. We need to take that crutch out of the game for advanced players.
i know these changes will mean fewer birdies and more bogeys and for a lot of players, that means fewer happy times and more sad times. And I'm ok keeping things easy on the lower levels.
But I think a lot of Tour Masters and up want a challenge. I'm tired of shooting 31s and 30s in nine-hole games. I want a birdie to feel like a birdie and not like a par. Let's make WGT feel a little more like golf again.
