For those who have played the first round. So tell us. How bad is it?

Gail force winds and putting on ice?

Just finished my round Darsum. As conditions go it wasn't as bad as I had come to expect.

The winds peak at about 20mph, which is timid if you have played a lot of heavy winds at St Andrews. The greens were clearly faster but not as treacherous as I remember the championship green speed of last year. That may of course be down to playing on tournament as default now, as opposed to going from very fast to championship.

As for my round; never got going until the back 9 and even then a careless 3 putt broke any momentum I had. Happy enough with my 65.

ps I used the divide by 1.4 formula for distance calculation and it proved very reliable.

    Winds were fine.

The greens on the other hand , no prier experience with them found them very tricky.

    sadly WD from the tournament

    Thanks tiffer, I appreciate it.

Nice round! I'd be extremely happy to shoot a 65 in those conditions on that course. I'll be right around par I suspect.

Scores coming in are fairly close to last years and I think the leaders will be around 61-62 at the halfway mark.

Andy; don't record your round unless you want lots of issues with your meter. Just not stable enough to play with, particularly given that it's a big tournament.

Sun; just a quick question - why WD? Your scoring average doesn't get affected and if you had a bad putting round, it's hardly going to affect your "69%" putting average. All it means is that you pass up on playing the 2nd round, therefore losing practice on champ green speeds and giving you less chance to perform well during the British Open (where you'll have the same greens again). Anyway, your loss and your competitors gain.....

Well looks like Andy bested that by 4 shots! : )

    Wonder if he recorded it?

sadly no i tryed in a practice round but meter was jerky........ in my champ round i missed 8ft eagle on 6 missed bloody ding grrrr, and missed a 8 ft bird on 18 dinged but bad read (heavy break on the ball) pitched in on 13 to save bird and rest was pretty solid.......... all i will say about greens is there not 2 quick but watch out on those big dwn hillers the roll and roll they break quick 2

    happy hitting Andy

Just played the first round, a very bad one I might add at 70 which included 2 bogies and a double on the back (Meter jerked it right on 11 into the water, drop was across the creek in bad rough no hope to get up and down).

Winds topped out at 20 mph, had that into me on 18 and couldn't get there in 2.  Green speed was as expected a notch above our normal tournament.  No real issues, actually putted fairly well although I seemed to leave myself in the wrong spots time after time on places like 10, downhill 9 footer slick as glass.

Fairly set up, although I am very unhappy with my score, I have to say that it wasn't conditions but sloppy play in terms of putting the ball in the wrong spots on the green and a couple of bad breaks.  Shouldn't have been great but should have been 63 to 65.
