Is it just me or does this hole (with the pin at 196 yards) behave utterly unpredictably for everyone? If you ding it in a cross-wind, it flies 10 yards farther than hole. If you miss the ding by even a fraction, it is 5 yards short every time. Yet, this hole is very consistent when the pin is at the back.

Please do not tell me it is 'deviations' or whatever. None of the other Par 3 holes in this game behaves so randomly. This is not a complaint or a moan; I'm just curious how it is for everyone else.

    Cheers.

Bethpage #8 has always been kind of weird ... from ANY set of tees.  And you're wrong .. definitely have to add Kiawah's  par 3 14th hole ... and maybe KIa #17, STA # 8. and a couple others.

I've always thought it about BP #8 and Kia #14 .... same shot in the same conditions very rarely ends up with the same result. Any kind of  missed ding is almost always very, very bad, so I think of them as must-ding holes .... even then, one shot might be 10 yrds short and the next 10 yrds long.

Totally. I gave up trying to be exact on that hole and believe it or not, I get the best results by not touching the aim and using a combination of choking and missing to get there.

I've always wondered if the trees that surround that hole make this happen by swirling the winds.

Recently I've been pretty consistent with it...now keep in mind I use G10's and Srixon balls, so your results may vary...

Say in moderate winds..6-10 MPH tailwind, I use my 190 club, full BS and hit about 90-95% (no tape on the screen...just an estimate) but like I'd hit a 185yd shot, usually leaves me within 8 feet.

Into the same wind, I use a bit less than 1/2 BS and hit the 190 club full power.  Again, leaves me with 6-8 feet.

Heavy winds into I use the 4iron (200 yd club) no or a touch of, BS) with a tail windno BS and the 6iron (175 club).

Because of the severe down hill shot, you have to over correct for side winds...if say 5mph side wind, I play it like a 15mph side wind.

That's the point. Any kind of wind have to be corrected when there is a severe downhill (the ball spend more time in the air). Oakmont #1 is another example. On this hole with headwind like 18-20 mph, one can be easily 5-10 yds short if additional corrections for the wind are not taken into account.

I am not talking about it going too far sideways. That can be accounted for. I am talking about distance control on this hole. It was relatively predictable when hitting from the Master tees with the G10s, but from the Legend tee and the Burners, it is a lottery for me. Every Legend I've played  has agreed with me about this particular hole. I wanted to know if it was a problem for everyone else too.

i also have a problem with the distance control on that hole. rarely can i hit it close even after busting out my TI-89 to do all the calculations.

I am not talking about sideway neither. I wrote "any kind of wind". On severe downhill shot, wind affects the shot in a more pronounced way than for other shots and wind affects distances.

Edit: concerning G10 and burner, it seems to me that even if they are both high trajectory, the burner have higher trajectory, but could be wrong (at least this is the impression I had when I went from G10 to burner). If this is true, then the ball is more affected by wind. But I didn't play with the G10 for some time now and already adapted to the burner so...

All so true. A very tough birdie.

But what's with that water hazard? Has anyone, ever, dropped a ball in that water?
