Now you got me started. We are living in a country where, for several centuries, blood has been spilled to have our freedom. Do you really want your tax dollars spent on exploring the so called red planet? We have people who are homeless, and starving right next door to us. Get excited about a BS machine roaming a far away planet. Do you plan on going there, setting up a homestead, how will you make a living? I will leave this post with these words, Live in your fantasy land.

Wow.....im glad the human race is`nt as narrow minded as you ren......we would still be living in caves and the earth would still be flat

i can see it now..."where do you think you are going mr vespucci(or any other name you wish to insert)....you cant go galavanting around the sea we have problems here....besides there`s nothing out there and you might fall off"

    Vespucci "oh...ok i wont bother"

we need crazy people who do crazy things, just cause they can.....like this fella!

I'm far from narrow minded nick. I have been fortunate enough in my 60 years, to visit several places on this earth. I strongly believe we all need to work on improving this rock, before we spend billions exploring another one. You are completely entitled to your thoughts and opinions. I served honorably in our military, to protect those rights. When considering, " Going Where No Man Has Gone Before". Let's try this, solving the problems we have right here on this planet. Let's stop destroying, and start repairing. I can't stand to see people homeless and hungry, there is no damn reason for this. I also can't stand to see someone standing on a corner holding up a sign begging for help, and seeing a cell phone sticking out of their pocket. Trying to help and fix all the problems is a catch 22. Just traveling around the U.S. is mind boggling, no need for over crowding and a lack of food or proper housing. The brilliant Scientists and Engineers of the world have more than enough to work on right here. I have been very generous over the years, donating my time and money to help find cures for problems we suffer with here. I find it hard to swallow, seeing my taxes funding far fetched projects. I'm all for exploration of the unknown, I just think we have enough of the unknown to look into right here.

I agree with you ren.....there are lots of problems on this little rock we call earth, but the homeless man will still be standing there as will the con man(he will never go away) until the money is spent in the right places!

Even without war....which incidently has cost more in ten years than the entire space program put together! http://costofwar.com/

I also dont believe that one nation should have to stump up the cash....it should be a world space program.....but that`ll never happen, were too interested in blowing each other up!(maybe one day)

Not saying they will...but would it not be truly amazing if life was found to once have existed on mars?

I'll let you draw your own conclusion on this emotive topic, but for me I shall continue to enjoy and support man's exploration of the Universe knowing that money alone can't simply get rid of world suffering.

I will sit back and enjoy the images from curiosity, knowing that space endeavors not only advance mankind's understanding of the Universe, but also drive the technologies that enrich our planet. I'll still donate money to help fellow man, knowing... hoping, that one day those who make the final decision on how it is spent will send it in the right direction.

oh and heres another rock for your enjoyment!

    The landing was pure Sc-fi....awesome.

Yes i believe it is a 2 year project....but i reakon its little nuclear engine will take it beyond that. 6 to 7 months doing nothing....seems like a bit of wasted opportunity...

An ironic choice of words considering that Opportunity is the name of a previous Mars Rover..

Indeed, let us move on to the "business" of golf. As much as we'd all like to solve the worlds' problems, one man can only do so much. As facetious as it sounds, I'll settle for a decent round with some good company.

    Doc :)
