porky pig meter & other issues

  For what VERY little it's worth, I played with a friend recently that has been around here much longer than I.  He told me that he plays his "important" games with his PC that runs Windows XP because he doesn't get stutter.  He plays his other games on any old computer because he can live with the jerky meter in social games.  He said his "ding %" feels like it's around 80% on XP, and around 30% on Windows7.

  This spoke volumes to me.  If any of this could be proven, it would stand to reason that the meter issues are precisely as stated by some......not on WGT's end.  But, it would also speak to the fact it's not on OUR end, either.

  I suppose we could technically uninstall 7 and install XP, or whatever, but the fact is very, very few would go to such lengths to play virtual golf.  Other things get in the way, too, like cache, etc.  But, the fact is.......if it's the OS you are using.....no one is really to blame until another OS comes out that works better.

  That comment alone has chilled me out I can tell you that.  I'm not trying to shoot 54 in a RG, though either.  I'm just here to have fun and do the best I can.  I get frustrated like everyone else from time to time with things I see that should be corrected.  But, for the most part.......it's still a game and hobby for me.

  I play using win7 and rarely get the jerky meter and when the jerky thing happens its usually when my anti virus is scanning.

  I run Windows 7, 64-bit, Pro on a run-of-the-mill machine (only two cores).  My meter is normally smooth. As a retired professional, I understand how to restrict my background processes, and which ones to restrict.  I also know how to optimize my internet connection for my particular speed, though that has no effect on the meter, just the loading times.

  I know what my time slice is. At one point I was running a little program in advance of playing that gave processes their slice 25% faster than normal, then put it back after I was through playing.  Since I've tweaked my background services, that no longer affords me any visible improvement, so I don't bother to do it anymore.

  I've always used Chrome. Since it's multi-threaded and grabs resources for each tab I don't open any tabs that might want the CPU (for accessing web content) while my swing is taking place.

  I have absolutely no idea how much WGT (via Flash usage) attempts to move graphics processing to the GPU as opposed to the CPU. If it were my program, I'd be looking at that really hard.

  I had read somewhere in the forum that XP definitely had an advantage over the other OS's, sorry to blow theories out'a the water, but I'VE got XP and STILL have occasional stutter. I believe it's caused by stuff running in the background. Even with Game Boost, because my GB is set to let security run regardless. I also notice stutter when another page (have 2 screens) has an animated advertisement running... 

  edit-I HAVE noticed that taking a practice swing or 2 sometimes smooth's things out too.

       I have used all browsers.well not all,but all mentioned here.has no effect on my meter.I get one stutter a month,But thats because of an update load.notification..

  the only thing other than that.is an occasional meter jump after I tap.This will happen for 2 holes.then go away.

  In all.I suspect what most of you do on the net other then the game.And or how your fire wall and anti virus is set up,and what kind it is(Macfee is the worst)  has something to do with it..

  Because if your PC or LP is actively doing things during the game ,it will reak havoc on the meter..

  Top posts Hyena. Really excellent stuff mate. I'm about as technical as a wet dishcloth, so I enjoyed reading your posts, which were to the point and didn't try to bamboozle me with technical garbage. I tried all the fancy browsers many Months ago, but my meter got that bad, I was chasing after it in the back garden !

  Me? I play on an old dog of a laptop, in little Old England, with Windows XP, Internet Explorer as a browser..... and hardly ever get a twitch. I'm with you though mate, I do have enormous sympathy for those who are plagued with problems.

  I'll say this once again: you need to stop your computer from doing anything else during your swing.  Your swing does NOT depend upon internet access.  You can prove this by setting up your swing, then unplugging your internet cable, then making your swing.  Your swing will proceed right up until you hit (or miss) the ding.  Then, your system will want to download new views. You will freeze.

  Disconnecting your connection will NOT prevent your system from expending time trying to access the internet. Anything you have running which is trying access may actually make things worse. You need to STOP those processes. If you have an older OS, like XP, or 98SE, you will have fewer difficulties. Fewer processes are trying to run.  Preemptive scheduling has less effect.

  I don't use game boosters.  That's because I know how to do what game boosters do, and can do it a little better than they can.  If you don't know how to do that, then download and use a game booster.
