A few thoughts on this subject:

    - objections are not covered by the Rules of Golf, and objectors show their limited ability to contend on the course,

    - Phil Mickelson did it, so how can any1 judge on this practice,

    - those shots may count to balls' lives (just a guess),

    - the game allows them, so why not take them?

They should count on ball life after all they are not really a putt but it might not count it against ball life if it is hit on the green with any club. Maybe Icon knows. Also I wondered if any stroke taken with the putter not on the green counted against ball life. I mean putts from the fringe are not on the green so they might count against ball life as well.

My line is "Putts on the green do not count", alas I don't know if it's fact or rumour.

I played against a lady Tour Legend the other day and she did most of her putting with her driver. She sunk most of them too.

I used it on 17 St. Andrews yesterday from the bottom of the green, all of may you put me on your block list. Have a great day and have fun!

Agreed! The shot on St. Andrews#17 (Road hole) is awful if you are stuck in the corner of the green. You need to chip it from there otherwise your putt ends up in the "black hole" bunker.

Several years ago I attended a 3 day golf school down in Orlando.

There were 2 men who were the teachers in this school.  One of whom was a former professional tour player, mainly the lower (Nike back then) but he had played in 3 US Opens.

We were talking about this very thing between the drills that they had us doing.  Later in the week as a part of our chipping drill he had us hit our sand wedge off the putting surface to a pin about 25 yards away, this was all on the big putting green that they used for practice.

After about 3 or 4 skulls that almost took out a few windows in the clubhouse I was able to get the shot to work fairly well without taking a chunk out of the green.  Even so I can always get a putt close than using a wedge and only use this shot when there is absolutely no other choice be it on WGT or in real golf

There's a green on St Andrews (#5 or #6 iirc) that if you get in the wrong position you HAVE to chip / pitch (well pitch actually). The green is 'U' shaped if you are on the left of the 'U' and the pin is on the right (or vice versa) you cannot even 2 putt to the hole.  Of course to do that you would have had to be seriously wayward, but hey, some of us ............

have gotten the "punch" to work on the green but not had much luck with the" pitch". Had NO luck using the "chip" setting. Maybe someone could write a tutorial on these shots. :-)

Use your 60 or 50 yd wedge in full shot mode not chip or pitch, double the yardage shown or  there abouts (practice) it works great i have holed many shots this way...
