There is a few things about this series a lot of people are not aware of or forget...

The Cardinals ace pitcher Chris Carpenter had a season ending injury earlier this year, so did their #3 starter Jaime Garcia and their #4 starter Jake Westbrooke, along with their closer Jason Motte, ALL very good pitchers...so they bring up all these rookies nobody has even heard of and are better....they have another rookie pitcher Shelby Miller who was 15-7 when they brought up Wacha and he is sitting on the bench....

also keep in mind this is the 3rd year in the bigs for Freeze, Carpenter, Craig, and I think Jay...Kosmas 2nd yr., and Adams is a rookie, and their BEST prospect was sent back down because he is an outfielder and there is no room for him.

as for Buck and McCarver lol...Joe Bucks dad Jack was the Cardinals announcer for decades, Joe was raised a Card fan...McCarver got his World series rings playing for St. Louis in the 60's....as did the all time great Bob Uecker...lol.

    Meh...Angels fan here.

Angels? Really? You sure were stroking your sausage over the Dodgers until the Cards took them out. How about you pick a team and stick with them instead of hopping back and forth from bandwagon to bandwagon.

as Tim and Joe said, "intent does not matter in obstruction calls."

    Very good point.

If intent is indicated by the 3rd baseman raising his feet in the air, I contend it never entered into the ump's decision as the replay below shows the ump looking away at that moment.  (But very odd the 3rd base ump Joyce said in the post game press conference: "when he tried to advance to home plate, the feet were up in the air and he tripped over Middlebrooks right there, and immediately and instinctually, I called obstruction,"  hmmm)

Interesting the replay also shows the runner losing his balance (putting his arms forward to catch himself) before he took the first step.  I think he would have stumbled anyway even if the 3rd baseman wasn't laying on the ground.  And he would have been thrown out without the "obstruction" because he was tripping on his own.

Whatever happened to let the players play decide the game?

Very curious analysis, Andy.  Obstruction is obstruction.  Cards win.

Oh?   The 3rd base ump Joyce said in the post game press conference: "when he tried to advance to home plate, the feet were up in the air and he tripped over Middlebrooks right there, and immediately and instinctually, I called obstruction,"   And you can see where he raised his arm and pointed at the 3rd baseman.

I am fully acknowledging that I am looking at this through homer glasses but as Tim and Joe said, "intent does not matter in obstruction calls." Hate to see it end that way but no complaining from me. And maybe that was the baseball gods making good for rosin-gate in game 1.

It was clearly obstruction..the first time the 3rd baseman had his legs up was for balance on the flop...the 2nd time was to clearly impede the runner, eff "Tim"...so glad it's his last year...

If anyone watching that game couldn't see that the third baseman tried to slow/halt the runner...they be a nut job, or just a full on Sox fan that can't deal with reality...and why did Buck an MaCarver even bring up "even if not intended-(or similar)", the guy surely tried to trip up the runner.

Yeah, what Muddlebrucks or whatever, the Bosox  3rd bagger did is exactly the same as a leg-whip or tripping in football....and how could ANYONE watching the replay ignore that fact...SO obvious and sorry Andy, I disagree, the 3rd base ump WAS looking at it when the legs went up the second time with the intent to trip and he reacted immediately and pointed to it. What is so amazing to me is that the guy, Muddlebutz, said several times afterwards 'what was I supposed to do?' Well dude, you coulda maybe tried not to cause the runner to fall down and maybe just admit to what you did. The old 'what'd I do?' act is pretty stupid, actually. But Craig would have scored easily if he hadn't been impeded. Pretty interesting that Farrell was later cursing NL rules?!!? It's the World Series, pal, always been that way...our park- your park. No idea of the rationale there....and he's the one coming from the league that has somebody else hitting for the pitcher. And yep, hallelujah, the last of Gasbag McCarver.
