For over 45 years before WGT came along, I was banging the ball in real life. A scratch at one time so I know a little about a comparison.
When I first started playing, I noticed a major "why is it set up this way?" right off the bat. I decided to let it go then, thinking there must be a reason and it'll become apparent. But after over 3 months of play, the "light bulb" has still not come on.
The ball always starts in the direction of the aim and any prevailing wind will have its effect, which WGT has. But change all after that. In real golf (and assuming a certain skill level), from driver to PW, one can fade/draw/hit straight a ball depending on the need of the shot, be it wind and/or fairway direction. Since we're all right-handed here in WGT-land, if you want the ball to draw, you simply ding to the left of exact ding and visa versa for a fade. The ball still starts in your aim direction but because you dinged left of dead-on, you've created spin for a draw. Just the opposite for a fade. The further left or right the ding, the more draw/fade one gets. Distance is only lost by less then max meter strength, and/or working the ball into a headwind and/or opposing crosswind, and/or elevation. Distance is increased on max meter strength by a draw/fade with the wind (favorable crosswind) and/or downwind, and/or lack of elevation. This is as in real golf.
Yes. In WGT, one can fade/draw a ball if you allow a favorable wind to do so. But 95% or more of WGT shots are dinged to offset or counteract the wind and you always lose distance doing so. Why? Because a exact ding is also max distance. The further from it, the more distance your clubs max drops. Yes, if you know how and if you have practiced it enough, you can draw/fade a shot for real. BUT...you had better be very, very experienced to know the outcome of doing so and many (including TL's) would think long and hard before attempting.
I hope I've made my explanation as clear as possible. Knowing that if this were to ever be considered, it would require a completely new WGT program (which ain't gonna ever happen in my lifetime!). I'm simply left to wonder why it is the way it is and not as it should have been from the beginning?
"Guesstimation" skill is required for both but one is logically more realistic. No??? Why not?
Thank you for the read and any/all comments (especially WGT) appreciated.
