" Thanks for the advise.  I had never tried doing 'punch' shots, and I think I know why.   After reading this I started a practice round.  On #2 on SA I had a 70 yard shot and tried the 70 yard punch with full spin... and it went 90 yards(granted, a lot of it was roll).  How much does the spin matter?  I've always tried to hit 'full' shots with spin around the greens until I read this, and figured I'd try to fill those gaps, as I seem to have a lot of shots between 30-50 yards."

70 yards out might be a bit too far out to try the punch...I stick to under 50 yards from the fairway, and under 65 yards from the rough.  If I'm in the fairway 70 yards out I can just pull out my full 75 yard wedge and make adjustments for wind and elevation from there.  But a punch shot from 50 yards with a wedge should just about stop dead on the green...mine always seems to.  Keep practicing it...

With a good wege and a whole lotta backspin the ball should stop dead within 3-5 yds. The flop shot fills in gaps very nicely with the wedges - it is also less affected by the wind and works great on rough and sand lies.

The flop is only good from  30 to 40 yards with the punch wedges I get 87 71 and 49  and 74 if I drop the 3 wood and add the 4th wedge which I do some at St..Andrews front 9.And sinceIi started using the punch with my wedges my average has dropped from a little over 70 to 65.95

    I meant punch ... typo'd that

I don't use the punch at all. You need balls and a wedge with great spin to stop it where you want it. That's a lot of quotes! I wonder if we could get an award for longest ever quote chain...

I use 3 wedges. One has a distance of 50 yards, one's 60 and the other is way better than the other two and is 85 yards and is 32 yards with a flop shot. When I'm 30 yards from the hole, which one should I use?

    That set-up is looooooooooooong gone.

Learn to punch the 60 degree wedge and you solve your 30 yard problem., no spin needed.   :-)

Decided to bump this ole relic. I now carry far better wedges, but a new dilemma has appeared - the 57 yard dilemma. See the first post.

I choke my 77 yard wedge down to 20 yards no problem. And my 50 yarder down to 15. It's just a matter of working out some percentages.

You could always manage your delivery / round better and avoid those problem yardages and actually play to the performance end of your wedge and preferred  yardage of choice instead of blindly ripping one and just waiting until it stops rolling to then see what your left with.

Just a thought.    Anyway , GL ,    Ace

That's true, but don't you just love a good SMACK with a 3 wood? ;)

I often get 57 yards because it's a short hole and I didn't realise the driver would put me there, or because I tried for 50 yards on a par 5.

Listen weedman ,  you've apparently burnt your last cell this morning.  No. 1 ,  you need to run a check ,  a stats check that is...and No.2 , if you think that women are incapable of executing golf shots and understanding course management , your as ignorant as the day is long. Stay off the bong and educate yourself about the world of golf and what's going on in it !

Here's a novel idea. Why don't you get rid of that Satin pacifier and get the CG64? it punches 50 and chokes insanely easy to cover anything you can't reach with the punch.

Then again, since you don't use the punch, you would have a dilemma anyway. I tried.  :-(
