    genorb:
    So when you hit the ball with a long iron, the velocity of the ball is higher and the wind has more effect on the ball but, as you pointed out, the trajectory is also more flat compared to a shot with a short iron (or a wedge). So on long shots, even if the effect of the wind is higher, the trajectory being more flat, the wind has less time to act on the ball. On short shots, the velocity of the ball is smaller and the wind has less effect but the trajectory being more curved (the trajectory is higher, so the difference between the arc length and the horizontal distance travelled is larger) and the wind has more time to act on the ball.

    This is true in WGT, but, having played IRL for many years, I can definitely say WGT's parameters for such are definitely off.

    I.e in Real Life, if I have a crosswind of 10-ish mph (guestimate) I play a wedge shot from 90 yards about a flag stick off to the side.

    If  I was playing the same shot from 170/180 hitting a 5 iron, I might play the flag stick plus a few more feet.

    In WGT, you really have to take it much further.  Again, thins is why I made a comment about players and gamers..players like me will struggle with this, gamers will figure it out.

    Who knows, maybe it's me and my old sticks that play IRL.

    Like we were having a discussion in our CC...heck, if I could figure out how to make 9 out of 10 puts with my driver, I'd do it! :)

    Headwind and upward elevation

    D = 150 yds; E = + 12ft; W = 10mph

    Then

    D' = [150 + 12/3] / [1 - 0.004 *10] = 154 /  0.96 = 160 yds

    Think your calculator is busted.  The Calculations don't add up, This is what I got:

    D' = [150 + 12/3] / [1 - 0.004 *10] = 160.4167 / 0.96 = 167 yds

    Only place I do calculations are on the greens and putting.  Everywhere else is pretty simple to estimate- 12mph wind in face take off 7 yrds..... the 1 thing I did that reduced strokes the fastest was learn to hit the punch shot with your wedges.... its like adding 3 or 4 clubs to your bag and reduces in between club shots dramatically...

    Well no... sorry

    D' = [150 + 12/3] / [1 - 0.004 *10]

    1. Numerator [150 + 12/3] : because 12/3 = 4, you get 150 + 12/3 = 150 + 4 = 154
    2. Denominator  [1 - 0.004 *10] : 1 - 0.04 = 0.96

    Thus the ratio is 154 / 0.96 = 160

    I wouldnt dream of dissing on any math wiz, applying a lot of formulas to this game. Im a number ignorant myself. D+[x/d'xA-10]+<C = a lot of random letters mixed with calculation signs (To me).

    But ... at the end of the day that is still what it is: A game. Games are meant to be fun. And to me, sitting and calculating variables out my wazoo is not fun. That would make me spend 90% of the time with my head in the notes/calculator, and 10% actually playing. To me that is not fun.
    I am here to play the game for fun.
    But everyone can, for all I care, use whatever they want to better their game.

    The formula I apply on my game is:

    Crosswind ... hmmm better adjust aimer.
    Headwind ... hmmm better add some more power.
    Tailwind ... hmmm better subtract some power.

    Up until now I still need something to apply when I "adjust" my button finger. Every now and then it goes of and does its own thing.
    And not the entire formulas of the world can change that.
    But this is only my opinion. Everyone is free to have theirs.

    When applying to my real golf, I dont do formulas either. Formulas is , IMO, good at setting up scenarios. But since we are dealing with humans here, those scenarios are almost never 100% according to the formulas.
    Experience from doing over and over and over and over again are much better recipes for success. ;)

    But kudos to everyone who can calculate the perfect golf swing.

    but then I remembered what my non linear equations professor once told me, always account for variable change...

    Where did this # come from?

    Hi All!!!

    Here is a small gift for those who choose to use the "Math" Approach to calculating Wind speed distance:

    Keep in mind... Multiply the calculation if there is a tailwind & devide the calculation if there is a headwind. Also MPH over 20... Your on your own. The calculations do not seem to apply perfectly. These calculations are to make quick work of the above mentioned second part of the [.100-(5 x .004)]  = .98

    MPH          Calculation

    4                  .984

    5                  .98

    6                  .976

    7                  .972

    8                  .968

    9                  .964

    10                .96

    11                .956

    12                .952

    13                .948

    14                .944

    15                .94

    16                .936

    17                .932

    18                .928

    19                .924

    20                .92

    Nothing is "perfect" specially this game with so so many variables (also makes this game great). However, the math calculations take of some of the variables out of the game. Think of these calculations as your personal caddy. Gives you best possible predictions to the distances... Up to you to hit the Perfect Shot!

    These calculations has made my game experience a bit bitter.

    Just be careful with your expectations. A lot of players yell foul when they don't get exactly what their calculations say they should. It's one of the frustrations that will p you off if you expect too much exactness.
