Hard to do both to that standard. My eldest was also football mad - Premier League 1 reps (Parramatta Eagles), and tried out in England for some big clubs. I watched all the extreme fitness training up and down sand dunes, running through water, swimming, sprinting and so on. Skills training was just relentless hard repetition several times a week, and game wise we we traveled more and then some...Yep know where you come from with all that. School level wise he was v good at rugby (league version as we are south Syd) and even captained. School level is average compared to anything rep though, and rep football told him one or the other anyway (football physio saturday morning said not long enough to recover).
